Policy and Global Affairs MSc Course overview

    Benefits of this course

As our global society becomes ever more interconnected and complex, it is becoming increasingly important to understand how our lives and the lives of others are shaped by the forces of local, national and international organisations, institutions and governments.

The policies they produce and actions they take can have huge consequences on our societies and as such, it is vital that we are equipped to not only understand these forces but be able to critically appraise and engage with them,

The MSc Policy and Global Affairs is designed to equip you with both the fundamental theoretical knowledge around the key stakeholders in policy making, and also give you the skills necessary to design and implement these policies in the real world.

The programme is designed to offer students a broad suite of academic areas to focus on, ranging from the economic aspects of policy, to the role power dynamics in policy creation and the function of media in activist campaigns.

    Award

You can select to apply for one of the available exit points for this course.

    • Master of Science (MSc)

    Who is this course for?

This course is for students wishing to advance their knowledge in key areas of policy making as well as develop further understanding of how policy is generated and implemented at both a local and global level.

    Structure

    Master of Science (MSc)

    Duration:

    • Full-time: 1 year
    • Part-time: 2 years

    Total credits: 180

    Modules:

    • 8 in total
    • Core modules: 3
    • Elective modules: 5

You will take three 15-credit core modules, which are compulsory. You will also choose five other 15 credit modules from the list of elective modules below.

Finally, you will complete a 60-credit dissertation.

    Core modules

    • Advocacy for Political Change (15 credits)

This module will equip you with knowledge of the history, theory, and tools of analysis of political mobilisation and social change. You will gain a critical understanding of the practice of political campaigning and advocacy; and explore the role of political communication as an essential tool of campaigning.

    • Victims: Policy and Politics (15 credits)

This module enables you to analyse the ways in which crime victims, processes of criminal victimisation, and criminal justice responses are defined, administered, evaluated and reformed within the wider contexts of politics and policy formation.

    • Public Policy and Economics (15 credits)

In this module, you will learn how to use economics tools to address key policy issues facing modern society. You will learn frameworks to determine when governments should intervene, and how to measure the effectiveness of such interventions. This knowledge will equip you to answer questions such as: Why are there inequalities? How much tax should we pay? Should health services be privatised?

    Elective modules

    • Topics in Development Economics (15 credits)

This module will focus on the issue of poverty, human resources and sustainable development. It will cover topics including investment in education and health, and the possible trade-offs for governments related to environment and development. It will introduce you to the way in which economics principles and concepts can be applied to the analysis of decisions made by developing countries.

    • Economic Evaluation (15 credits)

Health economics is based on the observation that resources for health care are scarce relative to the demands made on them. This module in economic evaluation provides an understanding of the basis upon which efficient choices about resources use may be made and offers an analytical framework for making these choices.

    • Health Economics (15 credits)

This module provides an understanding of the economic context within which health care is funded and provided and within which economic evaluation takes place. It also provides essential foundations in micro economic principles and theories required in later modules.

    • International Organisations in Global Politics (15 credits)

The module will provide you with an introduction to the politics of policy-making in the main international organisations. The traditional distinction between intergovernmental organisations and international non-governmental organisations will be made, but in addition attention will be given to the legal and theoretical significance of hybrids

    • The Politics of Forced Migration (15 credits)

This module provides an intellectually demanding and interdisciplinary route to understanding forced migration in contexts of conflict, repression, natural disasters, environmental change and development policy-making

    • Foreign Policy Analysis (15 credits)

The module covers a variety of issues in the study of foreign policy by engagement with the theoretical and practical dimensions of Foreign Policy Analysis. Themes include rationality and foreign policy; the role of domestic actors; the impact of bureaucracies; foreign policy leadership

    • Theories of International Politics (15 credits)

The module provides an inclusive view of theoretical approaches to the study of international relations/politics by allowing you to examine dominant and contemporary theories, such as realism, liberalism, Marxism as well as post-structuralism, feminism, green politics, post-colonialism, and constructivism.

    • Strategy, Diplomacy and Decision-making (15 credits)

This module compliments the material covered in the Foreign Policy Analysis and Economic Diplomacy modules, to explore practical approaches to the formulation of policy options, decision-making and negotiation in both the public and private sectors

    • Global Ethics: Principles, Power and Politics (15 credits)

This module introduces you to the traditions of ethical thought in international politics by looking at pressing issues, such as state and non-state violence that exceeds territorial boundaries and poverty and suffering linked to our interrelated global system.

    • Human Rights and the Transformation of World Politics (15 credits)

This module provides you with an advanced overview of the theory, history and practice of human rights, with a focus on how the development of human rights has changed the nature of world politics in the 20th and 21st centuries.

    • Digital Cultures and Everyday Life (15 credits)

This module will explore the sorts of roles new communication technologies—and in particular digital media, social media, and the Internet—play in the transformation of cultural, economic, political, and social structures and practices. You will review the key theoretical debates around new media and critically evaluate the claims being made about their influence and impact.

    • Crime, Media and Culture (15 credits)

This module analyses key interconnected issues including media proliferation, newsworthiness, moral panics, penal populism, scandal, media driven justice campaigning and ‘popular criminology’.
