The aim of the course is to train participants to use the BSL Production Test, which is an assessment of narrative skills for deaf children aged 4-11 years. The online course is based on a previous face-to-face course and is completed flexibly over a five month period.

BSL Online Production Test Training Course overview
The course can be completed flexibly by participants and all modules are online. Monthly webinars provide opportunities to interact with staff and other course participants.
Webinar sessions focus on sign language aquisition and linguistics, scoring British Sign Language (BSL) narratives and grammar and carrying out the test. Webinars are conducted entirely in BSL. Course participants are required to have sufficient fluency in BSL to follow and take part in webinar discussions.
Who is it for?
This course is designed for professionals (Deaf staff, Teachers of the Deaf, Speech and Language Therapists, etc.) working with primary-school-aged deaf children who use British Sign Language (BSL) to communicate.

The course provides an overview of sign language acquisition and BSL linguistics, as well as training in how to carry out and score the test, culminating in qualification to use the BSL Production Test and provision of all test resources.
What will I learn?
You will learn about deaf children’s language development in BSL and sign linguistics, and acquire the skills needed to collect and analyse a narrative sample using the BSL Production Test, as well as carry out and score the test.
The course consists of 4 online modules taken over 5 months.
- Module 1 - Introduction to the BSL PT and the training course
- Module 2 - Sign language acquisition and scoring BSL narratives
- Module 3 - Sign linguistics and scoring BSL grammar
- Module 4 - Carrying out the test, interpreting and reporting on test scores, and next steps.
Assessment and certificates
The course content is delivered online with each module accompanied by a webinar. Module assignments provide opportunities to practice the different aspects of the assessment – test administration, scoring and test interpretation.
Students who complete modules and pass all assignments can be registered as users of the BSL PT.
This course is provided by the School of Health & Psychological Sciences.
Eligibility
Participants must have a minimum level 2 BSL (Signature) to attend the course. Evidence of this will be required.
Small group webinars are conducted in BSL only.
Pairs of staff from the same school or service are encouraged to attend together where possible.
English requirements
Modules are presented in BSL and English.
