The event was organised by the School of Health & Medical Sciences, City St George’s, University of London for Pride Month, which takes place each year in June and is a time to celebrate the strength, love, and resilience of LGBTQIA+ communities around the world.

The film centres on three courageous litigants — Friedel Dausab, Rosanna Flamer-Caldera, and Raven Gill — who put their lives and personal safety at risk as they challenge discriminatory laws and advocate for greater rights and protections for LGBTQIA+ people. The event included an exclusive live Q&A with James Lewis, Co-Director, filmmaker and writer in person and Friedel Dausab, who joined online from Namibia.

Speaking about the event, Asma Ashraf, Academic Director for Practice – Nursing and Midwifery and LGBTQIA+ Community Inclusion Committee Co-Chair (LCIC) said:

Out Laws is an extraordinary documentary. It was deeply moving and incredibly impactful, the damage of colonial rule still impacts so many people globally.

Michelle Ellis, Associate Dean, Equality, Diversity & Inclusion said:

It was a very interesting and emotive documentary which highlighted the impact of colonisation, the importance of rights, activism and ensuring we maintain privacy and dignity for all.
