Speaker: Professor Lucy Dipper, Professor of Clinical Linguistics, Department of Allied Health, City St George's, University of London
In her inaugural lecture, Lucy will talk about the science underpinning the stories we tell in everyday life. Storytelling appears to be a fundamental human behaviour, integral to the way we connect with others, express our identity, share information and remember things. Lucy’s expertise in the analysis of stories stems from her undergraduate degree in Linguistics which she then applied to further study in the field of Speech and Language Therapy. It is through this lens of linguistic science and clinical experience that Lucy will talk about storytelling, showing how we can examine different levels of language to better understand how to support people with communication difficulties.
Professor Lucy Dipper is a Clinical Linguist in the School of Health and Medical Sciences at City St. George’s, University of London. Her research lies in the field of Stroke Rehabilitation where she specialises in aphasia: a communication disorder causing difficulties with speaking, understanding, reading, and writing, but not affecting intelligence. It can manifest as trouble finding words, forming sentences, understanding others, or issues with numbers and gesture, significantly impacting a person's life. Lucy’s work focuses on discourse production, with the aim of creating novel assessment and treatment tools that support clinicians working with people with aphasia to improve their everyday communication. Lucy is co-Chair of the Collaboration of Aphasia Triallists and serves on the steering committee of FOQUSAphasia which is a working group dedicated to spoken discourse assessment and analysis for aphasia.
About our inaugural lectures
City St George's newly arrived or promoted professors are invited to give an inaugural lecture to mark this milestone in their academic careers. Professors use the opportunity to introduce themselves, update colleagues on current and future research plans and share their research with wider audiences. It is also a chance to celebrate the support from friends and family, and from colleagues, mentors and collaborators past and present.
Attendance at City St George's events is subject to our terms and conditions.
