The Big Read: The Journalist Always Rings Twice: Ethical Challenges in Trauma Reporting
- 15:15 - 17:00
- Hybrid: Curve Lecture Theatre, Ground Floor, Cranmer Terrace, SW17 0RE
- Teams Online Meeting, click to join
In times of crisis, journalists face difficult ethical decisions—one of the most challenging being the ‘death knock’: interviewing grieving families in the aftermath of a tragedy. In January 2021, Clive Myrie’s BBC interview with Martin Freeborn—just 30 minutes after his wife’s passing—sparked debate. While such interviews can be distressing, research suggests that avoiding them altogether, such as relying on social media for information, can also be harmful to families.
So, what is the right approach? And what can journalists and healthcare professionals learn from each other when navigating these sensitive moments? Join Dr. Glenda Cooper, Head of Journalism at City St George’s, and Dr. Ayesha Ahmad, Reader in Global Health Humanities, for an interactive session to explore these dilemmas.
