What subjects did you study before applying for study at university?
Before applying for university, I pursued computer engineering in India, which provided a comprehensive understanding of various aspects of computing.
This included studying subjects like mobile computing, data structures and algorithms, computer graphics, software engineering, and database management systems. Within coding, I delved into languages like Java, C++, Python, and others, gaining proficiency in both theory and practical application.
This foundation equipped me with a diverse skill set and knowledge base, laying the groundwork for further specialisation and exploration in the field of technology and beyond. It also provided the technical skills and problem-solving mindset that drives innovation and iteration, which is crucial for HCI Design.
Were there any challenged affecting your decision to study at university? If so, how did you overcome them?
There were a few challenges that influenced my decision to pursue university studies. One significant challenge was financial constraints, as higher education often comes with substantial costs.
I received the Global STEM Masters Leadership scholarship from City St George's which helped tackle this hurdle. Additionally, navigating the application process, especially for international studies, presented logistical difficulties that were not completely in my hands, due to the administrative process followed by my undergraduate university.
I tackled this by carefully planning my application timeline, seeking guidance from mentors, and diligently preparing application materials. Overall, perseverance, resourcefulness, and seeking support from mentors and resources helped me overcome these challenges and pursue my academic goals.
Why did you choose City St George's?
I chose City St George's because of the reputation and structure of my course, MSc Human-Computer Interaction Design.
The core modules covered a lot of fundamental topics, and the elective modules were extremely well thought out in terms of providing additional knowledge in a field that is ever evolving.
The feedback from the program alumni was also extremely positive which reaffirmed my choice.
Added financial support in the form of the Global STEM Masters Leadership Scholarship played a big part in my decision as well. Since the university is in London, it makes attending UX networking events in the UK easy since a lot of them happen here
What does a typical week at university look like for you?
A typical week at university is a balancing act between university studies, extracurricular activities and social life. During weekdays, my focus is primarily on academic endeavours, starting with attending lectures and seminars where I absorb new concepts and engage in discussions with peers and professors.
These sessions are crucial for understanding course material and gaining insights into various topics. Between classes, I dedicate time to independent study, diving into coursework, completing assignments, and conducting research for projects.
During the weekend I try to relax and take a break, if the coursework pressure allows! I like exploring the vibrant city of London, visiting museums and art galleries is always on the agenda.
These outings not only provide a break from university work but also allow me to immerse myself in the rich culture of the city. I also catch up with friends over coffee, meals, or fun outings.
What has been your favourite module or aspect of your course so far?
My favourite modules of my course so far have been INM314 Understanding User Interactions and INM402 Data Visualization, as they have ignited my passion for visualisation frameworks, behavioural science and their practical applications.
Exploring theories of human behaviour and cognition revealed the intricacies behind user decision-making and interaction patterns. This module not only provided insights into designing user-friendly interfaces but also sparked a fascination with applying behavioural theories in real-world contexts.
Understanding how psychological principles influence user experiences has been eye-opening, highlighting the importance of empathy and user-centric design. INM402 Data Visualization has deepened my appreciation for the power of visual storytelling in conveying insights and driving decision-making.
It's empowering to apply these insights to create more intuitive and engaging digital products that resonate with users on a deeper level.
