Laura Manotas Romero is a MSc Project Management, Finance and Risk student.
What is your name what course do you study, what year are you in, what scholarship did you receive?
My name is Laura Manotas Romero, I am from Colombia. I am currently on the second term of my master’s in Project Management, Finance and Risk, and I was awarded the “Global STEM Leadership Scholarship 2021/22” by the School of Science & Technology.
What were you doing before you came to study at City St George's?
I was the business developer of a civil engineering tech company. I was in charge of the area and led the commercial growth strategy of the company.
I’ve always wanted to focus on high-impact projects. Hence, I decided to go back to school to acquire sound academic knowledge that, combined with my professional experience, would effectively take me to the next level to lead and manage these kinds of projects.
What has been your favourite module on the course, and what have you enjoyed most about your time at City St George's?
In this term, I’m looking forward to taking the Financial Engineering and Planning module, where I will learn how to make decisions on projects considering different financial instruments.
My favourite thing about City St George's is its diverse environment, where I have been able to meet and connect with other students from all over the world.
What are your future plans?
I’ve had the opportunity to see first-hand how well-managed projects can significantly enhance society and improve the lives of thousands of people.
I have a full-time offer from McKinsey & Co to work as a consultant in the Bogota (Colombia) office. My start date will be right after my graduation.
This wouldn’t be possible without the scholarship and the amazing opportunity to study here at City St George's, University of London.
What would be your top tip for our applicants?
Once you decide to study a postgraduate degree, you must be clear on what professional path you want to follow.
I found in this master’s degree the perfect combination of practical and academic knowledge with a unique focus on finance and risk.
I am sure that this degree will help me stand out professionally and advance higher project management standards in my region.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I wanted to thank the programme, Dr Peter Popov, and Dr Tatyana Micic for believing in me.
This is just the beginning and I am sure that I will be able to influence and advise the most important entities (public or private) to create positive change in my country and Latin America.
