What motivated you to pursue postgraduate study?

My decision to pursue postgraduate study stemmed from my clear career aspiration to become a solicitor. Recognising that achieving this goal necessitated completing the Solicitors' Qualifying Examination (SQE), I understood the importance of laying a solid foundation.

The Solicitors' Practice Programme (SPP) offered invaluable insights into the content and structure of the SQE examination which would help prepare me for the exams.

What were you doing before applying for a postgraduate degree?

I applied to the SPP during the conclusion of my final year of my LLB studies at City St George's. I also actively sought opportunities for work experience within the legal sector to enhance my skills and legal knowledge in anticipation of undertaking the Solicitors’ Programme.

This proactive approach enabled me to narrow down on the areas of law I aspire to practice in.

Were there any challenges affecting your decision to study a postgraduate degree? If so, how did you overcome them?

Several challenges influenced my decision to pursue a postgraduate degree such as the tuition fee and the prospects of securing qualifying work experience upon completing my postgraduate studies, given the competitive nature of the legal industry.

Fortunately, I was able to secure a bursary of £7,000 and an additional 20% alumni discount as I was a previous student on the LLB.

I have learnt that overcoming the challenge of securing legal work involves proactive networking, as building professional connections and fostering relationships within the legal community can significantly enhance opportunities for gaining valuable hands-on experience.

I believe that anything is possible with determination, so I have put my mind to utilising every opportunity that comes my way and making the most of it for personal and professional growth whether it be through my connections with the friends I have made on the LLB or on online platforms such as LinkedIn.

What does a typical week look like for you?

My week typically involves classes from Monday to Wednesday, starting as early as 9am and ending as late as 4pm. During breaks between classes, I use my time to catch up with my friends and complete any work that needs to be done before my next class.

On the days I do not have classes, I dedicate my time to reviewing the workshop materials, ensuring thorough comprehension, and identifying any areas that require additional focus.

I then complete the consolidation tasks that are set at the end of the workshops to bring together the skills and knowledge I have learnt.

Following this, I begin preparing my work for the upcoming week by watching lectures and doing the required reading as well as the preparation activities to stay ahead.

As I am part of the Marketing and Events Student Ambassador team, I have to manage my studies alongside my work responsibilities.

Due to the flexibility of shifts and availability, I can effectively balance my time and meet deadlines without compromise.

During the weekends, I try to leave this time free for socialising with my friends and spending quality time with my family.

What opportunities and experiences has City St George's offered you, so far?

During my time at City St George's, I have taken on the role of being a Student Ambassador within the Marketing and Events Student Ambassador team. This role has been instrumental in honing my communication skills, providing opportunities to interact with both current and prospective students.

Through these interactions, I have been able to talk about what the university has to offer, strengthening my ability to effectively communicate with diverse audiences.

Additionally, I had the opportunity of participating in an interview with a student journalist at the University, when I shared my experiences as a woman on the Solicitors' Practice Programme.

During this interview, I addressed various social, economic, and cultural barriers that I have faced, contributing to the broader dialogue on important issues and raising awareness of the challenges faced by women pursuing legal careers.

What advice would you give to someone considering a postgraduate law degree?

When considering whether to do a postgraduate law degree, I recommend thoroughly considering whether it aligns with your passion and aspirations. Given the considerable investment of time and resources required, along with the competitiveness of the legal field, it is essential that you make a well-informed decision.

A postgraduate law degree will be different from what you have done at undergraduate, requiring reflection and certainty in your choice before beginning on this legal journey.

Research the content of the postgraduate law degree, as you will dedicate a significant amount of time to learning, over the course of a year. Therefore, you need to ensure the course fits in with your interests and goals.

How have you found the academic and pastoral support from The City Law School?

The academic and pastoral support I have received from The City Law School has been extremely helpful. The environment is conducive to personal and professional growth, with dedicated professors who are eager to see students such as myself succeed in their careers.

I found it easy to become part of The City Law School community as I was a former LLB student at City St George's. Due to my familiarity with the university itself, I experienced firsthand the supportive environment which played a key role in shaping my legal journey.

Over the last four years, I have built valuable connections within City St George's. The City Law School community is filled with individuals who offer constant support and encouragement.

Every individual I have crossed paths with, during the course, has been incredibly helpful, creating an environment where I have not only gained valuable knowledge but also formed lifelong friendships.
