What motivated you to study at university?

I originally studied Journalism and Communications, where I developed a strong interest in law through reporting, research, and storytelling around public policy, governance, and social justice issues.

I wanted to build a deeper, more structured understanding of the legal frameworks behind the stories I was engaging with, which motivated me to pursue postgraduate study in law.

What were you doing before applying for a postgraduate degree?

Before applying, I completed an undergraduate degree in Journalism and Communications and gained professional experience in content creation, research, and communications across cultural, public sector, and media organisations.

This background exposed me to legal and regulatory issues in areas such as public accountability, ethics, and access to justice, which ultimately led me to pursue a postgraduate qualification in law to complement my existing skill set.

Were there any challenges affecting your decision to study a postgraduate degree? If so, how did you overcome them?

One of the main challenges was transitioning from a non-law background into an intensive law programme, as well as relocating internationally to study in the UK.

I overcame this by thoroughly researching the Graduate Entry LLB, seeking guidance from academic advisors, and preparing in advance to build foundational legal knowledge. The supportive environment at The City Law School has also made this transition much more manageable.

What services within The City Law School have you used, so far? How have they beneficial to your experience?

I have been able to work with The City Law School Legal Advice Clinic (CLAC), which has been a valuable and practical part of my experience so far.

Working with CLAC has allowed me to apply legal theory to real-world situations, develop my research and client-focused skills, and gain insight into professional legal practice.

It has also helped build my confidence as a law student by providing hands-on experience while being supported by academic and professional supervisors.

What is your favourite module, teaching experience on the Graduate Entry LLB (Hons), so far?

My favourite modules so far have been Tort Law and Criminal Law. I’ve enjoyed Tort Law for the way it connects legal principles to real-life situations through problem-based learning and detailed case analysis, particularly around duty of care, negligence, and liability.

Criminal Law has been equally engaging, as it explores the balance between individual responsibility and state power, while developing a strong understanding of offences, defences, and legal reasoning.

The teaching across both modules has been interactive and discussion-led, which has helped strengthen my analytical skills, confidence in applying the law, and overall understanding of how legal principles operate in practice.

Why did you choose The City Law School for your Graduate Entry LLB (Hons)?

I chose The City Law School for my Graduate Entry LLB (Hons) because of its strong international reputation and the practical focus of the degree, which I felt would complement my background from Canada.

The programme’s intensive curriculum, combined with opportunities to engage in clinics, pro bono work, and career support, promised a hands-on legal education that would prepare me for practice both in the UK and internationally. Being in London also offered access to a diverse legal community and global perspectives that I felt were essential to broaden my understanding of law beyond a Canadian context.
