What motivated you to pursue postgraduate study?

As a civil engineering graduate aspiring to enter the field of project management, I knew pursuing postgraduate study would provide me with valuable knowledge and skills that would enable me to excel in my career.

A postgraduate degree can open up new career opportunities in project management and the construction industry. Postgraduate study could also provide a platform for me to conduct research and contribute to the development of new knowledge in the field of project management.

Overall, pursuing postgraduate study could equip me with the necessary tools and knowledge to thrive in my desired career path.

What were you doing before applying for a postgraduate degree?

I completed my undergraduate degree in the UK (BEng Civil Engineering at University of Surrey). I gained endless skills from my experiences at university such as people skills, responsibility, self-motivation, time management, and budgeting.

I have also done several internships to aid my career kickstart. I've done an internship at Co-Opts - a startup business in the UK - as a research and development intern. This role utilized and improved my skills in data management and analysis.

I've previously interned at a construction site as well as directly shadowing the project manager and civil engineer of the project – through this I have gained various skills to help me comprehend and better understand the technical knowledge in my degree.

Finally, throughout my years at University, I have participated in and helped organize various events and extracurricular activities for members of the Arabic Society and the Students’ Union.

Were there any challenges affecting your decision to study a postgraduate degree? If so, how did you overcome them?

As a civil engineering graduate pursuing a master's degree in project management, finance and risk, I can attest that the decision to pursue a postgraduate degree was not an easy one.

One of the biggest challenges I faced was balancing work and study and it has been a pressure point for me. There were also doubts about my academic ability, as I was moving into a different field. However, I overcame these challenges by careful planning and research.

I weighed the potential benefits of the degree against the challenges and made an informed decision. Seeking advice from professors and professionals in my field of interest helped clarify my goals and alleviate any doubts or concerns.

Why did you choose City St George's?

I believed City St George's excellent academic reputation would provide me with the best possible education and prepare me for my future career. Additionally, I was drawn to the diverse student body, as I believe that exposure to different cultures and perspectives is crucial for personal and professional growth.

Another factor that influenced my decision was the university's location in the heart of London. As a bustling cultural and business hub, London provides endless opportunities for learning and networking, and I was excited at the prospect of being at the centre of it all.

How are you finding studying in the UK?

I previously did my undergraduate degree in the UK, but life in the UK is different than life in the middle east. I have the highest quality education and a diverse cultural experience - London is a vibrant city with a rich cultural heritage.

I also enjoy a more active lifestyle here, especially given the nature of this country from its hills to its designated parks. I can explore the city's museums, theatres, and cultural events, and sample diverse cuisines from around the world.

Studying in the UK and London has been a fulfilling experience as an international student, providing me with opportunities to learn, grow and explore new horizons.

What does a typical week at university look like for you?

As a current postgraduate student in MSc Project Management, Finance and Risk, I have found the course structure to be demanding yet rewarding. The modules are taught in bulk, with six hours of classes per day, which has been challenging but also an amazing experience.

The teaching is well-organized and clear, which helps me to stay focused and motivated throughout the week.

Additionally, this format has facilitated the formation of friendships with my classmates, making it easier to work on assignments and study together at the library. Furthermore, the course structure allows for extracurricular activities, such as organized class trips and participating in university societies.

The overall structured approach has provided me with a supportive environment to learn, grow and connect with my peers.

What knowledge and skills has your course helped you develop?

I have a thorough grasp of project management concepts, financial analysis, and risk management as a master's student at City St George's studying this course. Also, I've improved my interpersonal and communication abilities, allowing me to work well with teammates and stakeholders.

I have had access to a variety of extracurricular activities, modern facilities, and specialised career development opportunities. Additionally, the vibrant student community and numerous events and activities organized throughout the year have enriched my university experience and helped me to achieve my personal and professional goals. What are your career plans and how has City St George's prepared you for them?

My career plans are to work for a construction company as a project manager, leveraging my civil engineering background. Also, take into account the possible return on investment in terms of chances for wage growth and job promotion.
