I had a BSc in Computer Science and Engineering.

Why did you choose City St George's?

I chose City St George's for its esteemed Computer Science Department and its accredited MSc Software Engineering programme. Following a career break to raise my children, I am eager to update my skills and pursue my passion for software engineering.

How are you funding your studies – did you secure any financial support?

Securing funding for my postgraduate studies posed a significant challenge, particularly as my husband is the sole breadwinner in our family of four. Nevertheless, I was determined not to let financial constraints hinder my educational pursuits.

After exploring various avenues, I decided to apply for a postgraduate study loan from the government. Though the application process was lengthy, my perseverance paid off when my application was eventually approved.

The loan provided the financial support I needed to cover tuition fees and other associated expenses, alleviating the burden on my family's finances. This funding opportunity enables me to pursue my academic aspirations and advance my career prospects.

I am grateful for the support provided by the government. With this financial assistance in place, I am able to focus wholeheartedly on my studies and make the most of this valuable opportunity for personal and professional growth.

What does a typical week at university look like for you?

As a Software Engineering student, my typical day involves attending two-hour lectures followed by a one-hour lab session, covering two modules on some days, totalling six hours of study.

I find the lecturers to be knowledgeable and extremely helpful, and during breaks, I often utilise the time for group study or personal development in the library.

City St George's is a vibrant place to study, with numerous seminars, events, and volunteering opportunities always available. Personally, I make an effort to attend as many seminars as possible, as they provide valuable insights and networking opportunities.

Additionally, there are plenty of paid jobs offered every week, allowing students to gain relevant experience while earning income on a flexible schedule.

The university community is welcoming and friendly, fostering a supportive environment for learning and growth. Furthermore, CitySport is another attractive feature, promoting physical health and well-being among students.

Additionally, there is a 'travel buddy' program that facilitates exploring different places, adding an extra dimension to the university experience. Overall, my week at university is filled with a balance of academic study, extracurricular activities, and social interactions, contributing to a fulfilling and enriching student life.

What knowledge and skills has your course helped you develop?

Software System Design and Database modules have been particularly instrumental in deepening my understanding of software architecture and various data storage scenarios. These modules have expanded my knowledge to include NoSQL databases, distributed databases, and more.

Additionally, the Cloud Computing module has been a significant learning experience for me. Prior to enrolling in this course, my knowledge of cloud technology was limited. However, through this module, I have gained hands-on experience with platforms such as Google Cloud, Kubernetes, and AWS.

Given the increasing demand for cloud computing skills in the industry, mastering these platforms has become crucial for career advancement. Overall, my course has equipped me with invaluable knowledge and practical skills that are directly applicable to the evolving demands of the software engineering field.

From understanding complex software architectures to navigating cutting edge cloud technologies, I am confident in my ability to excel in the dynamic and competitive industry landscape.

What opportunities and experience has the rest of City St George's offered you so far?

I am the first generation who is going to the university in the UK. I also had a long career break due to raising my children. I had a very limited idea about job market, employer requirements and how to prepare myself for getting hired.

I applied for Mentorship programme offered by City St George's. Luckily, I was selected for this programme. In this mentorship programme my mentor is helping me with writing a CV and cover letter. I’ve also been shown an array of questions that are usually asked in Software Engineering job interviews. I will also be taken to their workplace and network with their colleagues.

What are your career plans and how has City St George's prepared you for them?

My career plan is to build my career as a Software Engineer. Currently, my master's programme provides me with an opportunity to equip myself with relevant skills for the job market. I have also utilised several services within my school and the university during my studies, and each has been incredibly helpful.

Firstly, the Academic English Module significantly improved my English language proficiency, which was crucial for my academic success. When I was unsure about how to write a CV or cover letter, I found support through the Professional Mentorship Programme.

This programme connected me with a mentor who provided invaluable guidance on crafting my CV and cover letter, as well as offering insights into potential employers.

Additionally, I attended a couple of online workshops, such as the Graduate Pathway and Career in Investment Bank workshops. These workshops were rich in resources, and I had the opportunity to ask questions and gain valuable knowledge about my career path.

Furthermore, City St George's is assisting me in every possible way to prepare me to achieve my goal. I am truly grateful for all the support that City St George's provides to its students.

What advice would you give to someone considering a degree in your subject?

If you're considering pursuing a degree in Software Engineering, I highly recommend City St George's as the best place to do so, especially for their MSc programme with a specialization in Cloud Computing. In today's technology-driven world, cloud computing has become essential knowledge for software engineers, given its pervasive use across various industries.
