What motivated you to pursue studies at University?

I pursued studies at the university driven by a passion for learning, a desire for personal growth, and a commitment to acquiring knowledge and skills to contribute meaningfully to society.

Additionally, the opportunity to explore diverse subjects, engage with experts in various fields, and pursue intellectual curiosity further motivated my decision. Ultimately, I aimed to broaden my horizons, develop critical thinking abilities, and lay the foundation for a fulfilling and successful career.

Why did you choose City St George's?

I selected City St George's because of its esteemed reputation in the UK and internationally, particularly in the field of shipping. The Master's programme offered aligns closely with my interests, and the modules are compelling.

Prior to applying, I visited the university to ensure it was the right fit for me, and I was affirmed in my decision. The campus boasts excellent facilities and is conveniently situated near shops and cafes for breaks and meals. Additionally, the manageable size of the campus ensures ease of navigation—an aspect I find crucial for efficient academic engagement.

The proximity of three tube stations to the university facilitates convenient transportation. Moreover, the university's extensive gym facilities, including multiple classes and discounted rates for students, offer a convenient option for fitness enthusiasts.

This enables students to efficiently integrate exercise into their schedules without the need to travel far distances.

How are you finding studying in the UK?

Studying in the UK has been a remarkable experience thus far. As an international student from Greece, I've found the transition both challenging and rewarding. Adjusting to a new educational system and cultural environment has broadened my perspective and enriched my academic journey.

Being a student from Greece in the UK has been enlightening. The multicultural atmosphere fosters diversity and encourages cross-cultural exchange, allowing me to connect with peers from around the world.

While adapting to British academic standards and teaching methods required diligence and perseverance, the supportive environment provided by the university has eased the transition.

Based on my personal observations, the university offers numerous events tailored for international students, facilitating opportunities for networking and social interaction. Furthermore, the accessibility of professors through email correspondence underscores the institution's commitment to academic support and mentorship.

My favourite aspects of being in London include exploring its world-class museums and galleries and enjoying its dynamic nightlife. Additionally, the city's efficient public transportation system makes it convenient to navigate and explore different neighbourhoods, like Notting Hill, Soho, Covent Garden, etc.

What has been your favourite module or aspect of your course so far?

My preferred module thus far is "Environmental Issues of Shipping," which offers a comprehensive overview of conventions and regulations pertaining to maritime compliance.

This subject matter is particularly captivating, as it underscores the critical significance of environmental concerns and elucidates the diverse array of regulations governing various forms of pollution.

Overall, I appreciate the modules for their provision of specific and pertinent information pertinent to the shipping industry, rendering it more appealing and practical for students.

Additionally, the university's initiative to organise numerous events and visits to shipping companies is commendable. These endeavours not only enhance our understanding and knowledge but also significantly contribute to expanding our professional network.

Another noteworthy experience I encountered was the organisation of a gathering by the school to acquaint students with the new leader of our engineering school, held during a casual pizza evening.

This event holds considerable significance as it affords students the unique opportunity to personally engage with the head of the department, thereby humanising what might otherwise feel like a strictly academic environment. Such initiatives not only foster a sense of community within the school but also promote meaningful interactions between students and faculty, enriching the overall educational experience.

Thus far, my tenure within City St George's has presented a myriad of opportunities and experiences, encompassing both university-sponsored initiatives and those extended by the city itself.

Primarily, I engaged in the application process for roles as a student ambassador and content ambassador, endeavours that not only provided financial assistance but also facilitated the enhancement of my skill set.

Furthermore, City St George's facilitated networking opportunities and hosted numerous events, thereby enriching my academic journey beyond the confines of the university campus. Another enriching experience facilitated by City St George's was the opportunity to partake in the celebration of the Chinese New Year.

Amidst the festivities, City St George's organised a vibrant Chinese cultural event at the pavilions, providing attendees with a firsthand glimpse into Chinese traditions and customs. This event not only showcased the vibrancy of Chinese culture but also offered a chance for cultural exchange and appreciation.

As participants immersed themselves in the festivities, they were treated to a diverse array of authentic Chinese cuisine, further enhancing the cultural experience. Such events serve as a bridge between diverse communities, fostering understanding, appreciation, and cross-cultural connections.

As an international student navigating an educational environment where English is not my native language, I have actively availed myself of the resources offered by the Academic Skills Team. Their invaluable support has significantly contributed to my academic progression and linguistic proficiency.

Through a series of tailored lessons and support sessions, they have equipped me with the necessary tools to bolster my English language skills, fostering a greater sense of confidence and comfort in my academic pursuits.

Have you undertaken a placement or secured one for your course?

During the previous summer, I had the privilege of undertaking an internship at a renowned Greek shipping company, an experience that offered invaluable insights into the intricate workings of the shipping industry.

While the university offers dedicated departments aimed at assisting students in securing suitable placements and navigating the application process, my decision to pursue an one year placement stemmed from personal preference, having already embarked on a summer internship in Greece the preceding year.

Undoubtedly, engaging in a placement programme remains a highly commendable option for every student. Through first-hand exposure to real-world scenarios and industry practices, placements not only augment academic learning but also furnish participants with practical skills and experiences essential for professional growth.

My tenure at the Greek shipping company underscored the immense value of experiential learning, affirming my belief in the significance of placements as an integral component of academic and professional development.

My career aspirations entail establishing a professional foothold in London for the foreseeable future, as I firmly believe it to be the optimal environment for my personal and vocational development, offering unparalleled opportunities for industry exposure and experiential learning.

Accordingly, I have commenced the process of disseminating my CV to prospective employers within the region, eagerly anticipating forthcoming outcomes. My keen interest in this domain stems from a deeply ingrained belief in the indispensable role of insurance in ensuring the operational integrity and resilience of maritime endeavours.

Recognising that insurance serves as a bulwark against the myriad risks inherent in shipping, including those arising from geopolitical instability such as conflicts and acts of terrorism, underscores its paramount significance.

I am fervently drawn to the prospect of contributing to the safeguarding of maritime assets and operations through the meticulous assessment and mitigation of risk factors inherent in the insurance realm.
