Overview
Simone Mamini is a Doctoral Researcher in Law at CITY ST GEORGE'S, UNIVERSITY OF LONDON where is also serving as a visiting lecturer in maritime and international law.
He earned a Full Master's Degree in Law from the UNIVERSITY OF GENOA (IT) and an LL.M. in Maritime Law from CITY, UNIVERSITY OF LONDON (First Class).
Simone's research is based on the crucial legal gap that international law presents in relation to the icebergs’ legal status and governance and their absence within circular economic schemes. While various international legal regimes govern marine resources, water bodies, and environmental protections, none define the icebergs’ legal status. This vacuum leads to legal ambiguities regarding ownership, exploitation rights, and ecological responsibilities.
As climate change accelerates polar ice loss, the potential concerning iceberg harvesting as a water solution has gained interest among both States and private entities. However, the icebergs’ exploitation presents complex legal, economic and environmental challenges, which remain unaddressed under the existing legal instruments and absent within the circular economic theories. Simone's research is aimed at integrating circular economic principles into iceberg governance, assessing how circular economic principles can guide sustainable iceberg utilisation while ensuring their legal and environmental protection as well as equitable access to water resources.
PROF. Mauro Barelli and PROF. Katherine Reece-Thomas supervise Simone's research
