Cheryl Dine

Overview

Cheryl Dine is a Doctoral Researcher at The City Law School. Her research project interrogates the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) essential security exceptions under which tariff and non-tariff measures are normally justified. It principally seeks to understand and establish the connection between trade rules and peace preservation, with an aim to develop a practical conceptual framework for invoking security exceptions in accordance with the World Trade Organization (WTO) legal texts. Her project is supervised by Professor David Collins (City) and Dr Mariem Ben Slimane (City).

Prior to commencing her PhD, Cheryl worked as a freelance consultant on legal development projects in Seychelles and as an intern at the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs in Vienna, Austria, working specifically with the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL). From 2017 to 2020, she worked as a civil servant in the Seychelles Ministry of Finance, Trade, Investment and Economic Planning, where she conducted research, provided legal advice and legal analysis for trade and trade-related matters, as well as negotiations for and on behalf of the government of Seychelles. In 2024, Cheryl participated in the WTO Young Professionals Programme within the Legal Affairs Division. Her professional and academic background is specific to international affairs, international economic law, world trade law and intellectual property law and policy.

Research Interests: world trade law, intellectual property law, investment law, public international law, dispute resolution, legal technology, human rights, consumer rights, anti-corruption, social change, justice, ethics, international affairs.
