Dr Leo Chadburn

Leo Chadburn is a composer, performer and writer whose work includes music for ensembles, music for film and installation art, and solo performances that merge his own voice with electronic music. It has been broadcast on BBC Radio 1, 3 and 6 Music, and internationally.

He has worked with ensembles including Quatuor Bozzini, The Britten Sinfonia, Phaedra Ensemble, The Marian Consort and Apartment House. He is a winner of, and multiple nominee for, the British Composer Awards.

He has released eight solo albums, including the widely acclaimed Sleep in the Shadow of the Alternator (2025), which followed 2021's Slower / Talker and 2024's The Primordial Pieces, both of which were named in Bandcamp Daily's top ten contemporary classical releases in their respective years.

His discography also includes remixes for artists including Franz Ferdinand, Grizzly Bear and Owen Pallett. Leo has appeared on albums and on stage with artists including Leafcutter John, Patrick Wolf, Pulp, Saint Etienne, Serafina Steer and Vashti Bunyan.

His extensive collaborative work with visual artists includes projects with Cerith Wyn Evans (Irish Museum of Modern Art), Jasleen Kaur (V&A Museum), Jennet Thomas (Grundy Gallery, Whitstable Biennale), Marianna Simnett (Serpentine Gallery) and Richard Grayson (Matt's Gallery).

His writing has been published in journals including TEMPO, The Wire, The Quietus and Frieze.

He is responsible for curating and administering the public concert series at City St George's, which includes international visiting guest artists, staff and PhD student research. He also organises student concerts throughout the year and performance events and workshops demonstrating the Department of Performing Arts' outstanding facilities for immersive and multichannel sound and music.
