About

Overview

Dr Qiang Zhang received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Utah in 2005 and held a Research Assistant Professorship at the University of Utah in 2006. From 2006 to 2011, Dr Zhang worked in the Osney Thermo-Fluids Laboratory at the University of Oxford supported by the Rolls-Royce Heat Transfer and Aerodynamics University Technology Centre (UTC). He was the main developer of a new high speed wind tunnel facility and associated thermal measurement techniques. His research focused on turbine blade tip cooling techniques. Dr Zhang was awarded the Rolls-Royce “Award to Inventors” scheme for 2013 in recognition for his UK/EU/USA patents, which were based on novel flow control and thermal management concepts arising from his research. From 2011 to 2014, Dr Zhang established his own research group at the University of Michigan - Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute where he made new contributions to experimental heat transfer research methodology, including novel methodologies for thermal measurement, wind tunnel control, and uncertainty analysis. At the ASME Turbo Expo 2016, he received the Best Paper Award for his work as PI on blade tip cooling. He also received the Best Paper Award at the Global Power & Propulsion Society (GPPS) 2017 conference.

The expertise of Dr Zhang in heat transfer experimental research has been internationally recognised. He has been an ASME K-14 heat transfer committee member since 2011. Since 2019, Dr Zhang has been Associate Editor for the ASME Journal of Thermal Science and Engineering Applications, and Guest Editor of Heat Transfer/Cooling Special Issue I&II for Aerospace Journal.

Dr Zhang is the leading PI for an EPSRC project (with Co-I from Oxford University and Cranfield University) titled Novel Unsteady Conjugate Cooling Mechanism, which has led to new understanding of heat transfer enhancement with controlled dynamic flow patterns.

In 2022, the "Turbo Heat Exchanger" dynamic thermal system design concept was patented by Dr Zhang. He is in the process of spinning out a new company for commercialisation with a talented team from both industry and academic backgrounds.
