Overview
Dr Megan Fourqurean is a Lecturer in English and Postcolonial Literature with expertise in African and Black diasporic writing from West Africa, the Caribbean and North America. Prior to joining City St George’s, she was a lecturer at the University of Liverpool where she taught across the BA and MA programmes with a focus on gender, sexuality, and environment in postcolonial literature and science fiction. Megan held a LAHRI Postdoctoral Visiting Fellowship at the University of Leeds, during which time she conducted archival research on the cosmological foundations of contemporary Nigerian speculative fiction.
Megan’s research interests focus on the entanglement of gendered, environmental, and spiritual subjects in contemporary African literature. She has a growing interest in how Black speculative fiction, broadly defined, engages with African and Afro-diasporic spiritual and ritual practices to address questions of human-environmental relations and rethink the boundaries of gender and embodiment in the Anthropocene. Her work expands this thinking to the wider field of postcolonial literatures, and she has published variously on anticolonialism and environmental resistance in Taiwanese American fiction (in press); multi-authored Afrofuturist fiction as activism; genre, ontology, and queer Nigerian futurity; and postcolonial approaches to new materialism in South Asian literature. She has also written on Nigerian author Akwaeke Emezi for the Literary Encyclopedia and is a new contributor to the open access journal Speculative Insight.
