Maria Garcia de Frutos

Overview

Maria is a senior midwifery lecturer with a strong public health expertise. She has over 20 years of nursing and midwifery experience, both within health systems and third sector organisations. In addition to her strong clinical background, she gained a MSc in Public Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Her clinical focus and research interests relate to social and reproductive justice, reducing health inequalities, women with complex socio-political needs, migrants and displaced populations.

Maria is a SHEA fellow and teaches both at undergraduate and postgraduate level, mainly public health and global maternal health related subjects.

Maria has led her clinical and academic career to meet the needs of the most vulnerable populations, both at local and international settings. She has focused on women’s health in contexts of social exclusion, from a clinical and socio-political perspective while working as a midwife in East London, one of the most deprived and diverse communities in the UK. She has worked and conducted academic and community research on migrant and refugee women’s health in contexts of social marginalisation and protracted displacement, in Greece and in the UK. She has also contributed to advocacy reports, policy making and research on socially excluded pregnant women facing the criminal justice system in England.
