About

Overview

Mai is a Senior Lecturer in Data Visualisation at the giCentre, where she designs, develops, and evaluates visualisation solutions to support decision making. Her research focuses on democratising access to data for non-technical users through collaborative, user-centred visualisation design. She works closely with healthcare practitioners, local authorities, and schools to co-design visual tools that support data-driven decisions, with a particular interest in incorporating lived experience into visualisation design.

She is a member of the scientific advisory board at the Wolfson Centre for Applied Health Research, the NIHR-funded Yorkshire and Humber Patient Safety Research Collaboratory, and the Steering Group for the Leeds Centre for Applied Education Research.

Mai received her PhD in Visualisation from the Centre for Human-Computer Interaction at Virginia Tech. Before joining City, she held research and teaching positions at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, the University of Leeds, and the University of Bradford. Her research has been funded by the Bradford Institute for Health Research (BIHR), NIHR, and EPSRC-related development funds. She publishes in venues including IEEE Visualization Conference, IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, and Symposium on Large Data Analysis and Visualization.
