Overview

Bio:

Konstantinos Daniel Tsavdaridis is Professor and Chair of Structural Engineering in the Department of Engineering, School of Science & Technology at City St George's, University of London (UK), Head of the Heavy (Strong Floor) Structures Laboratory, Director of the 'Steel, Composite & Hybrid Structures' group and the 3DMBC research group. Professor Tsavdaridis is also a Visiting Professor at the International Research Organization for Advanced Science and Technology (IROAST), Kumamoto University, Japan, and a Visiting Professor at the University of Leeds and member of the Robotics group.

Prof. Tsavdaridis' research focuses on static, quasi-static and dynamic full and large-scale laboratory-based testing on steel and steel-concrete composite structural members and systems. His vision about the design optimization of lightweight structures has led to the publication of more than 250 papers in renowned journals, international conferences and technical magazines. He is an inventor, and he has filed a number of GB and PCT patents on perforated steel beams, lightweight composite flooring systems and modular connections.

Prof. Tsavdaridis has been recognized as one of the world's top 2% scientists in the field of Civil Engineering since 2020 according to the database published by Stanford University and Elsevier. In 2024, he was recognized as a Top Scholar by Scholar GPS, placing him in the top 0.05% of scholars worldwide, being ranked #28 in Design across all Engineering fields. In 2019, he was awarded with a Senior Fellowship from the Royal Academy of Engineering to study and develop a novel type of 3D-printed Steel Connections of Modular Building Systems that allow for flexibility in design, and re-use via dismantling capacity.

Prof. Tsavdaridis is also a Consultant for numerous major national and European projects. He is the Technical Consultant (Structural Expert) for the regeneration project of TIF Helexpo in Thessaloniki, Greece. He is Chartered Engineer registered in the Engineering Council (CEng) and was awarded as one of the youngest Fellows of the Institution of Civil Engineers (FICE), a Chartered Member of the Institution of Structural Engineers (MIStructE), Licensed Civil Engineer in Greece (ΤΕΕ-TCG) and in Europe (EUR ING) recognized by the European Federation of National Engineering Associations (FEANI). Furthermore, he is also a Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (M.ASCE).

He serves as Editor for peer-reviewed international journals with focus on earthquake engineering, design of steel and SCC structures and application of composite materials. He is a member of international scientific committees, advisory boards, and research panels such as BSI (B/525/9) Structural use of Aluminium, BSI (B/525/8) Structures in Seismic Regions, fib (CEB-FIP, COM7-TG:7.6) Resilient Structures, IStructE – Sustainability Panel, and the International Association of Shell and Spatial Structures (IASS; WG:8) Metal Spatial Structures. Moreover, he is a scientific member of the European Convention for Structural Steelwork (ECCS), the International Association for Life-Cycle Civil Engineering (IALCCE), the Steel Structural Research Society in Greece (EEME-SSRS), the Hellenic Association for Earthquake Engineering (HAEE / ETAM), and the Hellenic Institute for the Fire Protection of Structures (EL.I.PY.KA).

He has provided expert opinion in several large inter/national projects and featured in public media to comment on disasters and structural catastrophes affecting human lives, such as The Grenfell Tower fire in June 2017. 

He is a qualified ICE Professional Mentor (73632894) for supporting training guidance for engineers seeking to become chartered. Due to his significant involvement with the engineering practice, between 2014 and 2021, he acted as the Chair of Employability for the Faculty of Engineering and the Placement Tutor for the School of Civil Engineering at the University of Leeds.
