About

Overview

Professor Pullen graduated with 1st Class BEng degree in 1987 in Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London whilst sponsored by Rolls-Royce (Aero Engines, Derby) on their thick sandwich “Total Technology” Programme. During his time at Rolls-Royce, he earned three prizes including top undergraduate sponsored and top graduate. He was selected by the Director of Design and Technology to undertake a PhD also at Imperial College London on full salary. The subject was micro gas turbines and high speed generators which he completed early 1991. He left the University to join Noble Denton in the field of offshore engineering (1990) working in various projects and locations including Angola, Netherlands and Norway.

In 1992 he returned to Imperial College London as a Lecturer to continue research into high speed electrical machines and develop teaching in gas turbine engineering, design and mechanics. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2001. Concurrently he was a co-founding member of the Turbo Genset Company being employed as Chief of Design in a consultancy role and authored a number of patents which underpinned the core technology. The company, now Turbo Power Systems www.turbopowersystems.com was listed returning several £million back Imperial College London in share sales. The company now goes under the name having over 100 employees. In 2007 he co-founded Dynamic Boosting Systems Ltd www.dynamicboost.com whose technology is based on the TurboClaw low specific speed compressor which he co-invented with his PhD student. This company currently employs over 10 with the technology being applied in refrigeration and heat recovery. During his time at Imperial College London he also co-founded the spin out Hydroventuri Ltd with the Dept of Physics, set up to exploit low head hydro power technology.

He joined City University London in 2008 as Reader, becoming Professor of Energy Systems in 2010 and developed teaching in automotive engineering including Formula Student and vehicle dynamics as well as creating a number of innovative design projects.
