About

Overview

Dr Tapper is interested in how we change behaviour to promote population and planetary health. She has a background in psychology but has worked in multidisciplinary teams, developing and evaluating a wide range of health and lifestyle interventions for both adults and children. These applied projects are informed by her programme of experimental research aimed at identifying and understanding variables that influence health and sustainability-related behaviours.

Some of her recent research relates to mindful eating, craving management and calorie labelling in coffee shops and restaurants. She has also been involved in projects aimed at combating COVID-related misinformation, increasing uptake of COVID vaccinations, and promoting more effective science communication.

Current funded projects

She currently holds funding of £238k from UKRI for a 2-year Knowledge Transfer Partnership with Oviva UK Ltd. This project uses novel behaviour change techniques and tailoring to transform the effectiveness and efficiency of Oviva’s digitally enhanced weight management and diabetes prevention programmes.

She also has £46k of BBSRC Consumer Lab funding for a project aimed at reduce the carbon footprint of a high street restaurant chain by nudging consumers toward healthier, lower carbon meals.

Textbook

Her textbook Health Psychology and Behaviour Change was published by Bloomsbury in 2021. It is one of the first books to provide comprehensive, authoritative coverage of this increasingly important field, and is intended as a primary resource for undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as researchers in related fields such as behavioural economics, public health and healthcare. The companion website also includes a wide range of lecture, seminar and assessment resources for instructors.

Recent media engagement

Her research on mindful eating has been featured on the BBC’s Trust Me I’m a Doctor with Michael Mosely. She has also contributed to Channel 4's Food Unwrapped and written about mindful eating for The Conversation.
