Janet Chute

Overview

Janet Chute is a Lecturer in Media Production & Digital Content Creation at City St George’s, University of London. She is an award-winning Senior Producer/Director and trained Journalist with over 20 years of professional practice in the UK and international screen industries. Janet’s career directly bridges traditional broadcast television, radio and contemporary digital, platform-led content — equipping students with the practical agility, editorial judgment, and industry-ready skills needed for today’s rapidly changing media ecosystem. Her contributions to the UK screen industries earned her a place on the competitive BAFTA Elevate Producers cohort (2022–2024), and she is a full BAFTA member.

She has developed and delivered high-impact factual and fact-ent series and documentaries for major UK broadcasters, US networks and streaming platforms, including the BBC, Channel 4, Discovery Channel, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+. Her work focuses on inclusive, socially conscious storytelling, ethical production, and securing sensitive access. She was the Senior Development Producer on the double BAFTA-nominated and Broadcast Award-winning documentary Charlie Hebdo: 3 Days That Shook Paris (More4/Smithsonian), securing world exclusive access. Her broadcast credits include The Billion Pound Flower Market (Channel 4), Abortion on Trial (BBC Two), Mary’s Bottom Line (Channel 4), Dare to Defy (Amazon Prime Video), and Body Bizarre (Discovery Networks International).

Janet has also produced and directed award-winning content for clients on digital platforms including Guinness, Apple, Astellas Pharma, the premature baby charity Bliss, and Celia Hammond Animal Trust. She cast, produced and directed How To Be My Ally (Channel 4 / HM Gov) — a landmark short-form disability allyship campaign that achieved over one million views per episode across YouTube and Instagram, and won double Lovie Awards (2025) and a Media Week Award (2024).

In higher education, Janet brings fresh industry currency to curriculum design and delivery, teaching across camera operation, lighting, post-production workflows (Adobe Creative Cloud), multiplatform storytelling, media law, and ethics. Prior to joining City St George's, she held module leadership and teaching positions at MetFilm School and the London College of Communication, University of the Arts London (UAL). She is particularly passionate about demystifying entry and progression pathways into the creative industries for underrepresented talent. 

Janet is a PhD researcher in the Department of Culture, Media & Creative Industries at King’s College London, where she holds a prestigious doctoral studentship. Her research investigates structural precarity, workforce contraction, and diversity policy in the UK television industry, examining how economic and technological shifts affect retention and career sustainability for disabled and working-class freelance practitioners. Building on a strong foundation of historical media research, her MA thesis — Chute's Western Herald: A Case Study of a Provincial Newspaper in Late 18th and Early 19th Century Ireland — undertook original archival research into the Irish provincial press during a pivotal era in the country's history.
