Overview

Dr Jacqueline Gibbs joined the Department of Sociology and Criminology in September 2023. She is Senior Lecturer in Sociology and is Student Experience Lead for the department.

Before joining the School of Policy and Global Affairs in 2023, Jacqueline was Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader for Sociology programmes at Middlesex University, London. Jacqueline is a Fellow of Advance HE.

Jacqueline’s research explores how vulnerability and care are understood and represented in contemporary culture and politics. Her recent work explores the gendered dimensions of a discourse of 'crisis' in public health and social welfare and gendered framings of vulnerability and deservingness in relation to health and illness. She has published on these themes in Feminist Media Studies, Feminist Review, and Sociological Review (Magazine). Her co-authored book, Bad Sex: Sexuality, Gender and Affect in Contemporary TV was published by Bloomsbury in 2025.  It explores the evolution of representations of sex and sexuality on television and was written with Billy Holzberg and Aura Lehtonen.

Jacqueline's further research interests relate to critical pedagogies and teaching practice in UK Higher Education. She is currently working on projects related to student-facing decolonisation initiatives and student transitions into HE. She has published on these themes in Teaching in Higher Education and MAI: Feminism and Visual Cultures.
