Overview
Irene is a Lecturer in Economics and a Research Fellow of CESifo. Her research is on international trade — specifically, how firms and the people they employ adapt to changes in trade policy, regulation, and the global trading environment.
Her current work asks two broad questions:
- How does trade policy affect firms? She quantifies how tariffs, regulatory barriers, and other policy changes affect firms’ export performance, competitiveness, and sourcing decisions, and traces the implications for aggregate welfare.
- How does international cooperation — or its weakening — reshape global supply chains? She examines how trade agreements, regulatory cooperation, and growing fragmentation in international trade influence where firms source their inputs and how they organise production networks.
This work has also taken her beyond academia. As an external consultant to the Macroeconomics, Trade & Investment Global Practice of the World Bank Group, she has evaluated the impact of technical regulations and industrial standards on trade. She has also advised on global supply-chain issues, including in the electronics industry.
Irene currently teaches international trade at the undergraduate level. She has previously taught international economics, econometrics, applied economics, and data science methods at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She has also delivered a lecture on Global Value Chains at the summer school of the Italian Society of Industrial Economics and Policy.
