About

Overview

Enrico Bonadio is Professor of Law at City St George’s University of London, where he teaches, researches and advises across the full spectrum of intellectual property (IP) law, with a particular interest in how IP responds to technological changes and to non‑conventional creative practices such as street art, music borrowing and gastronomy. His work combines doctrinal analysis, empirical inquiry and sustained engagement with creative communities, policymakers and international organisations.

Research and publications

Enrico’s current research agenda explores the intersection between IP and technology (including artificial intelligence and technical standards), the protection of unconventional forms of creativity, and the governance of innovation across diverse cultural and industrial contexts. He is the author of three monographs: TRIPS and Genetic Resources (Jovene 2008); Copyright in the Street - An Oral History of Creative Processes in the Street Art and Graffiti Subcultures (Cambridge University Press 2023); Food, Philosophy and Intellectual Property - 50 Case Studies (with Andrea Borghini, Routledge 2024); and is working on a fourth, Copyright, Litigation and Music Borrowing in Jamaica (with Bryan Khan, Routledge 2027).

Alongside his monographs, Enrico has built an extensive edited portfolio that maps many of the frontiers of contemporary IP scholarship. His recent and forthcoming editorial projects include the Research Handbook on Standard Essential Patents and Competition Law (with Jorge Contreras and Niccolo' Galli, Elgar 2027), The Cambridge Handbook of Artificial Intelligence and Trademarks: Reimagining Brands in the Algorithmic World (with Nicola Lucchi and Eduardo Alonso, CUP 2027), Artificial Intelligence, Visual Arts and Copyright: A Multidisciplinary Analysis (with Siri Egeland, Routledge 2027), Information Technology Law (with Uta Kohl and Andrew Charlesworth, Routledge 2026), Intellectual Property and Religions: Confluences of Faith, Ownership and Law (with Nicola Lucchi and Bryan Khan, Hart 2026), The Cambridge Handbook of Intellectual Property and Generative Artificial Intelligence in Europe (with Peter Mezei and Eduardo Alonso, CUP 2026), Street Art and Democracy (with Siri Egeland, Routledge 2026) and Intellectual Property in the Caribbean - Post-Colonial Perspectives in a Competitive Global Marketplace (with Natalie Corthésy, Routledge 2027).

His earlier edited volumes already span a wide set of themes, from Non-Conventional Copyright - Do New and Atypical Works Deserve Protection? (with Nicola Lucchi, Edward Elgar, 2018) and The Cambridge Handbook of Copyright in Street Art and Graffiti (CUP 2019) to The New Intellectual Property of Health - Beyond Plain Packaging (with Alberto Alemanno, Elgar 2016). More recent collections consolidate his engagement with contemporary debates in IP: Cannabis and Intellectual Property (with Natalie Corthésy and Yentyl Williams, Elgar 2025); The Future of Geographical Indications: European and Global Perspectives (with Andrea Zappalaglio, Elgar 2025); A Research Agenda for Patent Law (with Noam Shemtov, Elgar 2025); A Research Agenda for EU Copyright Law (with Caterina Sganga, Elgar 2025); Non‑Fungible Tokens, Creativity and the Law: Within and Beyond Copyright (with Caterina Sganga, Routledge 2024); Music Borrowing and Copyright Law (with Chen Zhu, Hart 2023); The Cambridge Handbook of Investment‑Driven Intellectual Property (with Patrick Goold, CUP 2023); Intellectual Property Excesses - Exploring the Boundaries of IP Protection (with Aislinn O’Connell, Hart 2022); The Subjects of Artistic and Literary Copyright (with Cristiana Sappa, Elgar 2022); and the photographic guide Protecting Art in the Street - A Photographic Guide to Copyright in Street Art and Graffiti (Dokument Press 2020).

Editorial and professional roles

Enrico is deeply embedded in the scholarly and professional IP communities. He serves as Deputy Editor in Chief and Intellectual Property Correspondent of the European Journal of Risk Regulation (Cambridge University Press) and sits on the Editorial Boards of the European Intellectual Property Review and the NUART Journal. He is a member of the Management Board of City’s Institute for Creativity and AI, CitAI (City’s Artificial Intelligence Research Centre) and the Centre for Creativity enabled by AI (funded by UKRI’s Research England), reflecting his sustained engagement with AI‑and‑IP debates. He is the co-editor of the Special Issue The Platform States Meets IP: Constitutional Accountability for Proprietary AI (with Nicola Lucchi and Eduardo Alonso, European Journal of Risk Regulation 2027).

He is also a member of the Law Society of England and Wales, ATRIP (International Association for the Advancement of Teaching and Research in Intellectual Property) and BLACA (British Literary and Artistic Copyright Association), among other professional and scholarly networks. As a dual‑qualified solicitor in England and Wales and in Italy, with several years of practice in top‑tier international law firms, he brings substantial practitioner experience to his academic work and public engagement.

Teaching, visiting posts and global engagement

Enrico’s teaching portfolio at City spans multiple intellectual property law modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, where he regularly integrates case studies from his research on street art, music and technology. His international teaching record is broad: he has delivered classes and talks in more than 150 universities and institutions across six continents, and holds visiting professorship roles at Université Catholique de Lyon, University of Hannover and at the WIPO‑affiliated master programmes in Turin (Italy), Ankara (Turkey) and at Kutaisi International University (Georgia).

He has also been guest professor at University of the West Indies (Jamaica) (2023), Keio University in Tokyo (2019–2022), Hokkaido University (Japan), Tel Aviv University, University of Turku (Finland), CUNY Law School (New York), Tongji University in Shanghai and the University of Melbourne, among others. In parallel, he regularly contributes to WIPO academic programmes (in Europe and beyond) and WIPO capacity‑building programmes in Asia and Africa. He has also conducted EU TAIEX training missions across Europe.

Grants, consultancy and public impact

Enrico has secured competitive funding from a wide range of bodies, often leading or co‑leading interdisciplinary teams that link IP with technology, development, trade and cultural heritage. His recent projects include the RELISH project (Reframing European Gastronomy Legacy through Innovation, Sustainability and Heritage), funded under an EU Commission grant (City share: £250k, 2025–2028), an Innovate UK Smart Grant for the ToneUP intelligent bodysuit project (City share: £15,814), and a Horizon 2020 grant for the INBOTS project on robotics and IP (€100,000). Additional awards include Foreign and Commonwealth Office and British Embassy funding for projects on intangible assets and knowledge‑based industries in Cuba, GCRF and HEIF/QR‑PSF grants on AI and IP in Jamaica and on geographical indications for Jamaican products, ESRC funding for research on UK‑EU‑Japan trade, and a GCRF Institutional Block Grant on IP, university innovation and social enterprise in the UK, Mexico and Cuba.

As a consultant, Enrico has advised the World Intellectual Property Organization, the European Commission, the European Parliament and several national governments, professional bodies and trade associations on IP and innovation policy. He was also invited to give talks and expert evidence at the UK House of Commons, House of Lords and the European Commission.

His research and commentary have attracted media attention, with coverage in outlets such as CNN, the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, the Washington Post, the New York Times, Reuters, Politico, the South China Morning Post, the BBC, The Times, The Guardian, The Independent, El País and The Conversation, underscoring his role as a public voice on contemporary IP issues.
