Overview
David joined The City Law School in June 2013. He has held a number of positions within the Law School which have focussed on professional courses and scholarship.
David qualified as a solicitor in 1993 practising mainly in the field of Civil Litigation and this remains his main area of specialism. David retained his practising certificate until October 2025 as he had previously supervised two legal advice clinics. He is still a member of the Board of Trustees of Islington People's Rights.
David first started teaching on the Legal Practice Course (LPC) at Leeds Metropolitan University in 1998 where he was the Director for the Part Time course. He was subsequently the Programme Director for the LPC at Manchester Metropolitan University before becoming the Head of Vocational Legal Studies at the University of Westminster.
In these roles, David was involved in the design and development of a number of programmes relating to the training of aspiring solicitors. In addition, whilst he was at Manchester, he helped lead the development of the Postgraduate Certificate in Legal Practice Management. The course was supported by the government's Higher Level Skills Pathfinder Fund.
David has occupied a number of positions for the Solicitors Regulation Authority and in particular was a member of the working party which designed the Outcomes for the LPC. David has held a number of other external positions and is currently a director of the Central Applications Board and an Education Quality Assurance Inspector for Social Work England.
David has experience of teaching lawyers in other jurisdictions. He is currently a tutor for the Institute of law in Jersey. In this capacity, he teaches Civil Law and Practice to candidates taking the Manx Bar Exams, Civil Procedure and Ethics for candidates taking the Guernsey Bar exams and Civil Procedure for the Jersey Law Course. Previously, David ran two summer schools for judges from Kazakhstan and was a part of a Law Society delegation to the country where he taught at the Supreme Court.
David has been a visiting/guest lecturer for a number of institutions both nationally and internationally. These include the British Law Centre which is based at the University of Warsaw, Hong Kong University and the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies in London. David has also provided CPD courses on Civil Litigation for the Solicitors Group.
David has acted as external adviser/approver for a number of Universities in the development of postgraduate and professional programmes both nationally and internationally. David is currently an external examiner at two other universities. He has previously been an external examiner for a number of universities as well as the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives.
David’s publications mainly relate to Civil Litigation and professional practice. He is currently a co-author of Dispute Resolution in Contract and Tort which is part of the Oxford University Press (OUP) SQE Prep and Practise series. He is also co-author of Advocacy materials for OUP’s SQE Build and Apply series. David is author of the latest edition of CILEX Education’s course book for the Professional Stage of the CILEx qualification. He is also co-author of the Civil Law and Practice study guide for the Manx Bar Exams and has taken over as author of the study guide for the Guernsey Civil Procedure course for the Guernsey Bar exams. Previously he contributed a chapter on the Legal Environment to Wetherly and Otter The Business Environment: Themes and Issues.
