About

Overview

Dr Alessandro De Martino is a theoretical condensed matter physicist. He studied physics at the University Federico II in Naples (Italy), where he graduated in 1994 with highest honours. In 1998 he completed his PhD in Theory of Elementary Particles at the International School of Advanced Studies in Trieste (Italy). After postdoctoral appointments at the École Normale in Lyon (France) (1998-2000) and at the Albert Ludwigs University in Freiburg (Germany) (2000-2001), he took a position as assistant professor at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf (Germany) (2001-2007), where he obtained the Habilitation in Theoretical Solid State Physics, and subsequently at the University of Cologne (Germany) (2008-2012).

In 2012 he moved to City, University of London as Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics.

In 2020 Dr De Martino obtained the Italian National Scientific Habilitation as Full Professor in Theoretical Physics of Condensed Matter.

Dr De Martino's research activity mainly focusses on the electronic and transport properties of novel quantum materials, such as carbon nanotubes, graphene, topological insulators, Weyl semimetals. He has several collaborations with international institutions, including the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (Germany), the Donostia International Physics Center in San Sebastian (Spain), and the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (India).

Since 2005 Dr De Martino is a co-founder and  member of the organising committee of the annual Capri Spring School on Transport in Nanostructures, a premier school for the advanced training of PhD students and postdocs in modern condensed matter physics, where world leading scientists give specialised lecture courses on topics of highest current interest.
