Law LLB (Hons) degree Course overview

If you are looking for a rewarding legal career or to develop sought-after skills for diverse fields, our LLB (Hons) Law degree will help you with both. This law degree provides you with the foundational legal knowledge required to become a barrister or solicitor, whilst also developing critical thinking, research, and communication skills applicable and valued across diverse public and private sector roles.

Our curriculum is designed to develop resilience, professionalism, and your ability to thrive under pressure.

You will have access to a range of inspiring modules in diverse areas of law such as: Company Law, Intellectual Property Law, Smart Technologies, Law and Justice, Mediation or Public International Law, and can choose from one of our five LLB specialisms in, Commercial Law, International Law, Human Rights, Professional Practice, or Law with Technology.

We offer you a multitude of opportunities to put theory into practice, network, volunteer, and gain practical experience working with real clients through our Career Activation programme modules and the award-winning Law in Real Life programme.

You will have the opportunity to take part in mooting competitions to develop your confidence and advocacy skills and witness the legal system first-hand during visits to courts local to us like the Royal Courts of Justice.

This three-year LLB Honours degree covers all of the core modules required in UK legal education.

Bachelor of Laws (LLB) with Specialisms

In addition to the LLB Law degree we provide the opportunity for you to graduate with a degree in a specialised area of Law.

All students entering our LLB Law route can apply to one of the five specialisms below or continue with their general LLB (Hons) Law degree. You can make this choice at the end of your 2nd year.

If you enter a specialism you will need to study at least 4 15-credit modules related to this pathway in your final year.

Begin studying the core legal subjects to lay a firm foundation for specialisation later in the course.

Principles of the English Legal System (15 credits)

This module provides an in-depth introduction to the evolving English legal system, examining its principles, institutions, and key actors. You will develop essential legal skills to critically analyse, debate, and evaluate the delivery of justice.

You will learn about the criminal and civil legal systems, and alternative dispute resolution and consider the impact of social and political changes on these systems.
Law in Practice (30 credits)

This module will introduce you to the essential skills needed for advising, drafting, and representing clients in a legal context. It will also introduce you to legal technology, and the use of artificial intelligence in the field of law. With insights into diverse career paths, it enhances critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Foundation of Legal Analysis (30 credits)

This module helps you understand the broader context of law. It introduces you to different theoretical perspectives such as legal philosophy, history, and economics, from which to critically analyse and evaluate legal rules.

By exploring questions about justice, morality, and the role of law in society, you'll gain a deeper understanding of the law's impact and how it shapes our world.
Principles of Contract Law (15 credits)

This module offers a comprehensive introduction to contract law, a cornerstone of commercial and private obligations. Contracts are the enablers of all market functions and the key sites of economic exchange.

They underpin almost every aspect of our day-to-day life. You will explore the formation, content, enforcement, and discharge of contracts, developing a critical understanding of how they shape commercial relationships.
Principles of Criminal Law (15 credits)

The module covers substantive criminal law, with a particular focus on the principles of criminal liability – what is required to be proven/disproven in order to achieve a conviction. These principles will be studied in action through an examination of selected core criminal offences. By analysing real and hypothetical scenarios, you will develop the skills to apply these principles to legal problems. This module lays the groundwork for a deeper understanding of criminal law and its societal implications.
Principles of Public Law and Human Rights (15 credits)

This module introduces you to the core principles of UK Public Law covering aspects of Constitutional Law, Administrative Law, and Human Rights.

These areas explain the legal foundations of the UK’s governmental and political system. By understanding these fundamental concepts, you will gain insights into how power is exercised, regulated, and challenged in the UK's legal system.

Year 2

Principles of European Union Law (15 credits)

This module introduces you to the European Union, its history, legal framework, and institutions. The aim of this module is to introduce you to some of the essential principles of EU law, which have contributed to shaping the EU into the unique entity that it is today. This includes legal principles, values and mechanisms, as well as the legal rules of the internal market with regards to free movement of goods and persons.

More specifically, this module will enable you to understand the relationship between EU law and national laws, will teach you about the political institutions of the EU and the Court of Justice and the scope of their jurisdictions.
Principles of Land Law (15 credits)

This module introduces you to the fundamental principles of Land Law. You will explore the concept of land ownership, the different types of property rights, and the legal framework governing land transactions. By understanding how land law shapes our daily lives, you will gain insights into the complex relationship between individuals, property, and the law.
Principles of Tort Law (15 credits)

This module introduces you to the fundamental principles of tort law, a legal area concerned with civil wrongs. You will explore key torts like negligence, defamation, and nuisance, understanding how they protect individuals from harm and loss.

By analysing case law and real-world scenarios, you will develop your legal reasoning and critical thinking skills, gaining insights into the role of tort law in resolving disputes and upholding justice.
Further Issues in Criminal Law (15 credits)

This module deepens your understanding of criminal law, exploring sexual offences, non-fatal offences, property crimes, inchoate offences, and modes of participation. Engage with key cases, controversies, and socio-economic contexts, including intersections with race, gender, and class. Through critical analysis and practical training, develop advanced legal reasoning skills while examining fairness, equality, and the role of criminal law in protecting freedom.
Further Issues in Tort Law (15 credits)

Explore the evolution and breadth of tort law, from negligence in Donoghue v Stevenson to defamation, privacy, and occupiers’ liability. This module deepens your understanding of torts, legal philosophy, and judicial decisions, equipping you with analytical and research skills to navigate legal debates and apply established laws to contemporary challenges in this dynamic and impactful area of law.
Regulation and Ethics for Innovation (15 credits)

This module explores the ethical and legal challenges posed by transformative technologies like AI, blockchain, and quantum computing. You will analyse how innovation disrupts existing laws and ethical codes, learn principles of regulation, and develop creative legal solutions to emerging issues.

You will learn about the legal frameworks and innovative solutions being developed to address these challenges, equipping you with the skills to navigate the complex intersection of law and technology.
Smart Technologies, Law and Justice (15 credits)

This module introduces you to the cutting-edge technologies transforming the legal landscape. You will explore how AI, automation and digital tools are revolutionizing law firms, courts, and policing.

From drafting contracts to obtaining and analysing evidence, these technologies are reshaping legal practice and the justice system. You will gain hands-on experience with these tools, preparing you for a future where technology is integral to the delivery of justice.
Legal Career Enhancement and Employability Skills (15 credits)

This module aims to introduce you to a series of competencies that will enhance your career readiness. It will also raise your awareness of the diversity of careers following a degree in law and related fields. Given the competitive nature of the legal sector and changes in the market, exposure to alternative careers where the LLB is commercially viable is equally important.

Overall, this module aims to extend your awareness of your place within the field of legal professional education and practice, developing knowledge of alternative approaches and extending your awareness about employability and career development in this sector.
Legal Ethics and Professional Responsibility (15 credits)

This module provides an overview and critical perspective on legal ethics, professional conduct and professional regulation, and provides a foundation for understanding the role of lawyers in society and contemporary legal practice.
Mediation (15 credits)

This module gives you insights into the skills of mediation that a good legal professional should possess. It will help you understand how to rely on non-law sources and skills to bring about a resolution to a civil dispute which would otherwise lead to expensive litigation.
Company Law (15 credits)

The limited company remains the most important business organisation in modern economic life. This module introduces you to the foundations of English company law applicable to limited companies. It provides a thorough grounding and critical appreciation of the law related to the structure and management of companies.
Family Law (15 credits)

The aims of the course are to provide you with a thorough understanding of the core legal principles and policy considerations governing family law in England and Wales, as they emerge from the relevant statutes and case-law, to offer an insight into the debates arising under family law and proposals for legislative reform, as well as to highlight the relevance of international norms in proceedings involving family matters.
Foundations of Public International Law (15 credits)

The purpose of this module is to introduce you to public international law by providing a critical overview of selected aspects, rules and principles of the international legal system.
Immigration Law (15 credits)

Immigration and asylum policy are issues of great importance for society and for the individuals and families affected. You will study the law that regulates this field, seeking to understand how far both human rights and the public interest are properly protected. Your studies will focus upon the substantive law relating to economic migration, family migration, and asylum.

You will be exposed to the historical context of immigration regulation, to its philosophical underpinnings and to its practical operation.
Intellectual Property Law (15 credits)

Intellectual property (IP) refers to property rights in intangible goods. This module introduces students to UK patents, copyright, design rights, trade marks, and the international context of IP law.

The module provides students with a grounding in IP law (sufficient to allow graduates to practise IP law or to undertake advanced study in the area), and an ability to critically evaluate IP law in the twenty-first century.
Law relating to Domestic Banking (15 credits)

This module aims to provide you with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of domestic banking law and to introduce you to a number of important areas of domestic banking, in particular those areas where banking is regulated by statute. These include the regulation of banking and consumer issues where relevant to banking and financial services. You are also given a wide range of materials as appropriate.
Law, Rights and Context (15 credits)

This module explores the operation of law and rights in their wider social context. The module is an opportunity for you to think more deeply about law and society from multiple disciplines as well as international perspectives, including political, social, economic and cultural.

In particular, we will explore questions such as how inequalities are structured globally and locally, how rights interrelate with social hierarchies, divisions and inequalities and what is the significance of, challenges, critiques and alternatives to law and rights in society.
Sustainability and Climate Change (15 credits)

This module will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the interconnected issues related to climate change and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The module aims to empower you with the necessary skills and understanding to contribute to a sustainable, fair and just society in a changing climate via your career and local community.

You will work together in teams to identify and address a challenge related to climate change and sustainability. You will evaluate and reflect on your role in the local community and in global society.
The UK and the European Union (15 credits)

This module analyses the relationship between the EU and the UK, with a view to understanding the position of the UK in EU law and the place of EU law in the UK. It introduces a historical perspective on the UK’s relations with the EU, and critically analyses the developing modes of interactions between the two legal systems.

Year 3

Principles of Equity and Trusts (15 credits)

This module delves into the fascinating world of Equity, exploring its historical development and its enduring impact on the English legal system. You will learn how Equity complements and sometimes challenges the common law, offering flexible solutions and innovative remedies.

By examining key doctrines like trusts and specific performance, you will gain a deeper understanding of the law's capacity to adapt to changing social and economic contexts. This module invites you to reflect on the role of law in society and consider the limits of its potential to address complex issues.
Industry Projects

Industry Projects is a ‘Career Activation - Professional Experience’ module. It provides you with an opportunity to participate in a group project and work on a live brief or a task set by an external organisation.

The ability to work collaboratively in teams, both face-to-face and remotely is critical to career success. Students who are flexible and adaptable, with well-developed relationship-building and problem-solving skills will be better prepared to transition confidently into the workplace.
Micro-Placement (15 credits)

This module seeks to enhance career exploration and will provide you with professional level experience in the form of a self-contained project with one of City’s external employer partners.

Your Micro-Placement project will last for 4 weeks and will take place from June, once your second-year finishes. Please note the timing of your Micro-Placement does not follow the standard academic timetable.
Law in Real Life (15 credits)

The aim of this course is to give you a direct practical experience of law in practice, and an opportunity to reflect on their experience. We work closely with various partners including the Pro Bono Community, a registered charity who assist with training and placement provision, to enable us to offer a range of options.

Alternatively, you may identify your own not for profit placement which will be subject to the approval of the module leader. All decisions on placements are final and must fit the module aims and outcomes. You should note that hours completed prior to the start of the module cannot be counted.
Mentoring and Coaching for Leadership (15 credits)

This module sets out to provide you with a structured opportunity to acquire mentoring and coaching skills.

The module is based around practical activities in parallel with conceptual development so that you will build a framework for understanding mentoring and coaching processes, while at the same time gaining experience and relating this to the practical issues.
Advanced Issues in International Law (15 credits)

This module focuses on several important issues that arise in the context of public international law. It allows you to develop a deep and critical understanding of the selected aspects, rules and principles of the international legal system, while also appreciating their complex relationship with the realities of international politics.
Child law (15 credits)

Child law is a legal subject potentially of interest for everyone at some stage in their life. In addition, it prepares aspiring lawyers for practice in this area, as well as casting light on high-profile cases involving minors.
Commercial Sales Law (15 credits)

In this module, you will learn about the rights and obligations of buyers and sellers, acting in both Business-to-Business and Business-to-Consumer Sales and transactions that involve the sale and supply of goods and services, as well as digital content.

In particular, you will learn how to relate your knowledge of the relationships between parties to contracts for sale of goods, supply of services, and mixed contracts, and be able to appraise the rights and obligations of businesses and consumers as parties to commercial transactions.
Comparative Constitutional Law (15 credits)

This module involves comparative exploration of constitutions across the world. We will take a thematic approach to the subject, looking in detail at the way in which fundamental constitutional structures, institutions and principles are provided and catered for across the world.
Competition Law (15 credits)

This module will introduce you to the competition law of the European Union and the United Kingdom. Their three major substantive elements address each of the potential competitive distortions above: the oversight of coordination between businesses; control of unilateral abuses by dominant market actors; and regimes for assessing the impact of mergers between firms. Competition law is a fascinating subject owing to its location at the intersection between law and economics.
Cross Border Commercial Law (15 credits)

The module will examine how commercial legal concepts are described and applied in specific areas of cross-border commercial transactions. The core of the module will be on international sale of goods – with a strong emphasis on other aspects of cross border commercial transactions.
Global Issues in Corporate Law (15 credits)

This module explores selected key topics in corporate law that arise from the significant role of large companies as international actors in global markets. The module provides an overview of the economic and institutional dynamics that influence the use and control of decision-making power in large (typically, publicly traded) companies.

The rights, duties and obligations of key participants in corporate governance (especially the board of directors and shareholders) are examined in detail. The focus is on UK corporate law and governance but, where relevant, an international and comparative angle is examined.
Higher Education Legal Knowledge Co-Production (15 credits)

The aims of the module are to bring together students and members of academic staff (and potentially others, including partners who are not CLS academic staff, in the case of CAP-module projects) to work together on a project concerned with Higher Education legal knowledge or learning, broadly defined. Any professional activity that takes place within The City Law School is potentially a suitable project.
European Convention on Human Rights (15 credits)

Adequate knowledge of human rights law facilitates an increased awareness of current domestic and international events, as well as being necessary in virtually every area of legal practice. In fact, the human rights discourse is often employed as a rhetorical device, without a proper appreciation of the exact scope of the rights.
Human Rights, Technology and Society (15 credits)

This module explores the intersection of technology, society, and human rights, focusing on the legal and ethical challenges posed by advancements like AI and blockchain. Examine dynamic issues such as privacy, democracy, and robot legal personhood. Gain critical insights and skills to navigate emerging legal landscapes and ensure human rights protection in the digital era.
International and Comparative Intellectual Property Law (15 credits)

This module will provide you with a thorough grounding and critical appreciation of the relationship between international, regional and national IP law and allied rights in key jurisdictions.
International Commercial Arbitration (15 credits)

The aim of this module is to give you a detailed understanding of the practice and normative framework of international commercial arbitration (ICA) and its roots in national and international law as well as in international business customs.

The module demonstrates the relevance of ICA in an international and commercial context in the 21st century and enables students to appreciate various factors that influence parties in choosing arbitration as their preferred method of international dispute resolution, and the particular challenges and problem areas that exist.
International Criminal Law (15 credits)

This module looks at how we deal with the worst atrocities on the international scale. How does the international system – states, international organisations, individuals – decide which acts are to be punished, who are the perpetrators and what court can pass judgement on them? How has this system, effectively born after World War II, developed over time and why is it relevant today?
International Human Rights Law (15 credits)

This module offers an introduction to international human rights law in a legal and political context. It provides an overview of various international human rights standards and of the international and regional mechanisms that work to implement them.
Introduction to the Solicitor's Professional Qualification (15 credits)

This module will provide you with a foundation of practice-based knowledge and understanding required as part of preparing for the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE).
Labour Law (15 credits)

Through reading and writing an essay you will develop your understanding of some of the theoretical debates in this area. You will also learn how to solve topical Employment Law problems. You will be given guidance in carrying out independent reliable legal research in this fast-paced area of law.
Law, Race and Colonialism (15 credits)

This module explores the concepts of colonialism and race and the relationship between these concepts and law. Based on the premise that law is central to the constitution of social life, political meaning, cultural and economic relations, the module will explore the role law has played in producing histories of violence and present situations of social inequality.
Law, Technology and Property (15 credits)

This module examines the private law challenges posed by emerging technologies such as AI, blockchain, and digital assets. Explore issues like property definition, liability, and contract automation while assessing existing legal frameworks and reform proposals. Build advanced legal analysis skills and gain insights into a dynamic field, enhancing your employability in the evolving technology-driven legal landscape.
Legal Skills (15 credits)

The Legal Skills module aims to introduce you to the following legal skills: writing; drafting; client interviewing; advocacy and presentation; negotiation and client interviewing.

You will also consider some of the main professional conduct considerations applicable to the legal profession in England & Wales. Having studied the academic theory behind the principles of law, this module gives you the opportunity to see how the theories are applied in practice.
Maritime Law (15 credits)

The main aim of the module is to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of principles and policies of English Maritime Law, as they emerge from the relevant statutes and case-law.

This module provides you with an opportunity gain knowledge about the legal principles that govern Commercial issues in Maritime law, Public International Law and the Law of the Sea. You will learn about maritime issues such as Cargo Claims and Carriage of Passengers Liabilities of the Vessel (Collision, Salvage, Average Adjusting) and Piracy.
Media Law (15 credits)

This module aims to provide you with in-depth knowledge and understanding of the relevant laws which regulate the media and their publications.

Through this module you will gain an appreciation of the influence of relevant case law and key principles from the European Court of Human Rights. You will also develop your ability to analyse and apply these principles to hypothetical problem and essay questions.
Medical Law and Bioethics (15 credits)

During your studies for this module, you will critically reflect on questions of bioethics, law and policy around the practice of medicine in England and in other countries. You will also draw on a range of critical, contextual and interdisciplinary perspectives to build your understanding of medical law and bioethics. You will explore complex dilemmas arising from medical innovation, providing you with an opportunity to assess the ethical controversies that the law must now confront.

Teaching and assessment

Lectures, seminars and tutorials are the main teaching methods on the LLB course.

Alongside your fellow students, you will learn about fundamental rules of law and their application in a variety of contexts in lectures.

Seminars will enable you to engage with and discuss assigned materials in a less formal setting.

Regular tutorials will allow you to meet with your subject tutor as part of a small group to analyse problem scenarios and to explore in depth a variety of legal issues.

All face to face classes will be fortified by materials and learning packages on our virtual learning platform, Moodle

You will be encouraged to take part in activities such as debating, national and international mooting (a legal debate) and volunteering. Combined with your legal studies these activities help you to develop a broad range of skills and build your self-confidence.

Some modules will provide you with the opportunity to develop employability skills – you will have the opportunity to develop your abilities in interviewing, mediation, in house legal practice and client handling.

City's Library is one of the best stocked libraries in the country. Our printed collections consist of around 250,000 books with over 25,000 online journal titles and over 1,600 study places available in our libraries.

The City Law School and Law Library are located in the Law Building. The Law Library offers state of the art learning resources, from the UK and worldwide. You can access our online materials and learning resources held by the library either on site or remotely, thus enabling flexible learning.

As a law student, you will be provided with appropriate training to use our extensive collections at the start of your course.

Extra-curricular activities

At The City Law School we offer a range of opportunities to grow your legal potential outside of the course.

Mooting is a key part of life at The City Law School and we believe it is one of the most effective ways for you to develop the competencies you need to be a successful lawyer. Mooting helps you to master important legal skills, such as research and analysis, whilst also gaining experience of public speaking and argument.

We offer opportunities to provide legal advice to real clients in a range of areas of law, organised by our popular City Community Legal Advice Centre (CLAC). We currently have a number of partnership programmes at local, national and international level.

We know the importance of work-based learning. We offer you a chance to shadow an employer, under our micro-placement scheme, to help you gain invaluable insights into the world of professional work and develop valuable work-ready skills.

You will be assigned a personal tutor when you start who will guide and advise you as to your career and learning options. Your personal tutor will also be able to assist with any welfare and wellbeing issues you might encounter during your time at The City Law School.

Assessment methods

Law students are assessed by a variety of methods. Those include written coursework, mooting, portfolios, multiple choice question tests, oral and written examinations, as well as project work and activities undertaken as part of a team.

We recognise the importance of prompt and helpful feedback to you. Academic staff highlight the learning outcomes at the start of each module, ensure that core skills are developed and refined as part of the course and provide students with effective feedback on individual and group assignments.

Overall workload

You will be expected to prepare in advance for both lectures and tutorials by undertaking directed reading of textbooks, legal cases, academic articles and other materials.

Lectures and seminars normally last for two hours and tutorials last for one hour.

In Year 1 of the programme you will have approximately 12 hours of timetabled teaching each week and in Years 2 and 3 you will have approximately 10-12 hours of timetabled teaching each week.

Your timetabled classes may take place between 9:00 – 19:00 Monday to Friday. In addition to this you will be expected to complete approximately 30 hours of independent study per week to prepare for classes and consolidate your learning.

We are offering a Graduate Loyalty Discount of 20% on tuition fees to all our alumni when applying to any of our degree courses.

To be eligible for the discount you must have successfully completed an undergraduate or postgraduate degree at legacy City, University of London or legacy St George's, University of London.

To apply you will need to be accepted onto your intended course of study and to meet all the normal academic admissions criteria for the relevant course at City St George's, University of London.

Career

This LLB (Hons) meets the requirements for the academic stage of legal training for barristers, meaning you can progress to the vocational stage of training, such as City’s Bar Vocational Studies (BVS) programme, after successful completion (subject to meeting the entry requirements).

It also provides you with a solid grounding in legal knowledge as part of preparation to take the Solicitors Qualification Examinations to qualify as a solicitor.

As an undergraduate law graduate you might also work for:

How to apply

Applications for degree courses must be made through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS).

You can apply through your school or college using the Apply system, which enables you to submit your application directly to the UCAS website.

You can apply to up to five universities or institutions on the form. The UCAS code for City, University of London is C60.

Please take care to enter the correct course code when applying, particularly for subjects with a Foundation year or with BEng (Hons) and MEng (Hons) or BSc (Hons) and MSci (Hons) options.

UCAS has implemented an 'invisibility of choices' policy so that, on the initial application and while you are receiving decisions, each institution can see only their entry and not those of other institutions you have chosen. This ensures that your application for a course at City is considered solely on your academic and personal qualities.

You should submit your completed application form to UCAS with a £26.50 application fee. If you want to apply to City, University of London only, you can make a single choice application at a reduced rate of £22.

The Law School Building on Sebastian Street has now opened its doors and will provide a new home for The City Law School.
