Typically the only scenario where we make conditional offers expressed as UCAS tariff points is when an applicant presents mixed qualifications, most typically a combination of A-levels and a BTEC qualification.

In this instance, we may make a tariff point offer to present the applicant with more flexibility on equivalencies. In this case, please be aware that we may still ask for a specific score across certain qualifications and subjects. E.g. 'This offer is conditional on you achieving 128 tariff points. This must include A-level Mathematics at grade B.'

    Subject exclusions

We do not accept General Studies and Critical Thinking. These subjects will not be included in any conditional offer we make.

    Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

We welcome applications from students who are completing relevant EPQ Projects. Whilst we recognise the value of these projects in preparing students for independent learning at university, the EPQ is unlikely to form part of any conditional offer we make.

The EPQ will also not lower the specifics of any conditional offer we choose to make. We will consider the EPQ as part of the holistic assessment of the application and it could be used to form part of our final decision at Confirmation stage.

    AS levels

We recognise that there will be differences of opportunity varying by school and college. As not all students will have the opportunity to sit AS Level exams, it is unlikely we will include AS Level grades in any offer we choose to make. Where students have completed an AS Level subject, we will consider this as part of the holistic assessment of the application and it could be used to form part of our final decision at Confirmation stage.

    University preparation programmes

If you do not qualify for direct entry, you may wish to take a foundation programme first. These programmes are designed to prepare students for entry to City St George's' undergraduate courses.

    Access to Higher Education

We welcome applications from students with an Access to HE Diploma. These applicants will be considered on the basis of their own merits. Please be aware that Access students may be asked for further information to supplement their application, this is normally in the form of a questionnaire.

A typical offer would be: QAA Access to HE Diploma with 60 credits overall, to include 45 credits at Level 3 with 24 credits at Distinction and 21 credits at Merit, and a minimum of grade C / grade 4 in GCSE English Language and grade B / grade 5 in GCSE Mathematics.

Economics BA (Hons) degree Course overview

Throughout your time on the programme, you will move from acquiring core economic concepts and contexts to applying economic ideas in more specialised modules. By your final year, you will demonstrate how to integrate your knowledge to analyse contemporary economic problems, hone your communication and research skills, and position yourself for careers where economic analysis and reasoning and strong communication skills are paramount.

This programme is especially suitable if you want to work in environments that require you to interpret, explain, and apply economic ideas. You will develop numerous highly sought after transferable skills as well as the ability to evaluate and communicate economic policy and use programming skills to analyse and interpret relevant data.

You will learn to adapt economic concepts to real-world settings, draft and present economic briefs and reports as well as how to communicate with a range of stakeholders, preparing you for roles in government, consultancy, policy think-tanks, non-profit organisations, and other arenas where economic insight and applicability take centre stage.

During your studies you will explore the following areas:

  • Core principles of economics, where you gain a fundamental grounding in micro- and macroeconomics, behaviour of individuals, firms, and governments, and how their decisions shape markets and societies
  • Historical and institutional context, where you investigate how economic theories and policies have evolved over time
  • Policy analysis and evaluation, where you develop skills to interpret and assess policy interventions and applying economic reasoning to real-world issues
  • Data literacy and visualisation, where you will learn the foundational techniques of data handling, visualisation, and interpretation, giving you the confidence to support your arguments with evidence.

  • Placements

Year 1

Lay firm foundations for future study.

  • Principles of Microeconomics (15 credits)

Understand how choices shape markets and everyday life. This module introduces you to the core ideas of microeconomics — how individuals, firms, and governments make decisions and interact in markets. You will explore how prices are determined, how markets function and sometimes fail, and how economic theory helps explain real-world behaviour. By learning to think like an economist, you will gain insight into how incentives drive decision-making and how policies can influence social and economic outcomes. The knowledge and skills you develop here will underpin your future study of applied and theoretical economics.

  • Principles of Macroeconomics (15 credits)

Discover how economies work at the national and global level. This module introduces you to the key principles of macroeconomics — the study of the economy as a whole. You will examine how governments, central banks, and international institutions respond to challenges such as inflation, unemployment and growth. By the end, you will be able to connect macroeconomic theory with real-world events and policy debates. This foundation will prepare you for more advanced study in economics and help you interpret the economic issues that shape daily life, business, and politics.

  • Data Analysis 1 (15 Credits)

In Data Analysis 1, you will understand how an economist thinks and works. You will be introduced to the collection, manipulation, representation, interpretation, analysis, evaluation and presentation of statistical data.

  • Data Analysis 2 (15 Credits)

Building on the knowledge and skills acquired in Data Analysis 1, the purpose of this module is to expand and deepen your understanding of statistical data analysis and inferential statistics.

  • Mathematical Methods for Economic Analysis (15 credits)

Economists carry out economic analysis by using a varied set of methods that range from inductive and deductive techniques to the use of data and quantitative methods to test economic theories. Underlining all these approaches is the use of mathematical techniques that help to formalise theoretical and applied frameworks of economic ideas. This module introduces you to the key mathematical techniques used for economic analysis and how they apply, in particular, to the formalisation of microeconomics and macroeconomics ideas and models that you will explore in your study of economics. The module places greater emphasis on the use of graphical analysis in the explanation of key concepts.

  • Applying Economics to Contemporary Issues (15 Credits)

This module provides an introduction to how economics can be used to shed light on a range of topics that concern policymakers, businesses and the general public in today’s world. Examples of topics to be covered include, amoung others: inequality, climate change, inflation, unemployment and international financial markets.

  • World Economy (15 credits)

This module introduces you to the forces shaping economies across the world. You will explore how countries grow, trade, and respond to global challenges, from financial crises to climate change. By the end, you will have a clearer understanding of how international linkages affect everyday life and why economic decisions in one country matter for others. You will build a strong foundation in macroeconomic thinking while connecting it to real-world issues that shape politics, business, and society.

  • Finding your Future in Economics (15 credits)

This module helps you to develop the career readiness and practical key skills required for a successful future career in the diverse careers related to policy and global affairs. It will raise your awareness of the diversity of careers following a degree in the School of Policy and Global Affairs, boosting your ability and confidence to explore career options you may not have considered previously. This foundation of greater understanding about career options will be built on with training in the practical skills needed to secure professional employment in these competitive industries such as CV and application writing and securing work experience.

Year 2

Develop your knowledge of micro and macro-economics.

  • Business Economics (15 credits)

This module applies microeconomic ideas to the analysis of industries, markets, and business environments. You will explore how firms compete, how prices are set, and how market structures affect performance and innovation. Real-world case studies will help you connect theory to practice—examining topics such as competition policy, digital markets, and the economics of sustainability. By the end, you will understand how businesses operate within markets and how economic thinking can explain and predict firm behaviour and industry outcomes.

  • Managerial Economics (15 credits)

This module focuses on how managers use economic principles and analytical tools to make strategic decisions within organisations. You will explore how firms allocate resources, set prices, manage costs, and respond to risk and uncertainty. Emphasis is placed on optimisation, game theory, and demand analysis, with practical applications to business strategy and management. By the end, you will be able to apply microeconomic reasoning to real managerial problems and make data-informed decisions that enhance organisational performance.

  • Macro-economic Policy (15 credits)

This module builds on your understanding of macroeconomics by examining how economic policy influences growth, inflation, employment, and stability. You will study how fiscal and monetary policies are designed, implemented, and debated, and how policymakers respond to challenges such as financial crises, inequality, social crises, and climate change. Through real-world case studies and data analysis, you will assess the effectiveness and trade-offs of policy decisions in the UK and internationally. By the end of the module, you will be able to apply economic reasoning to understand and critically evaluate macroeconomic policy choices.

  • Quantitative Methods (15 credits)

What happens when the model breaks down? This module deepens your understanding of econometric reasoning by exploring what happens when the assumptions of the classical linear regression model fail. Consideration is given to the nature of economic data and the difficulties these may present for the applied economist interested in the evaluation of economic policies or the testing of theoretical hypotheses. Methods for testing model specification and alternative techniques for handling problems of misspecification are discussed. Using real-world economic data, you will develop the skills to diagnose model weaknesses, apply appropriate remedies, and interpret results critically. By the end, you will be able to use econometric tools responsibly, recognising both their power and their limitations in empirical economic research.
