In a recent international survey commissioned by City St George’s, University of London, almost all respondents (97%) said that employability and work experience are important aspects of their course content.
In a survey of prospective students across the US, Canada, and India, employability skills and work experience are now the defining factors for students choosing where to study in the UK. When asked about the most important factors in selecting a UK university, students overwhelmingly prioritised features linked to career readiness:
- 87% rated employability skills training among their top five criteria
- 83% cited work experience opportunities
- 82% emphasised recruitability skills
- 81% valued careers support before and during their course
- 78% identified post-study work opportunities as essential
Gemma Kenyon, Director of Employability of City St George’s, University of London, commented:
“This research reinforces what many in the sector have long recognised: today’s students expect their degree to be a springboard into the world of work. At City St George’s, our mission is to combine rigorous academic study with practical experience, equipping graduates with the confidence and capabilities that employers need.”
The findings also point to the benefits students associate with integrating employability into the curriculum. Two-thirds (66%) believe that skills-focused learning prepares them effectively for the job market, while 58% said it ensures they gain essential competencies. Over half (54%) said it helps connect learning with the real needs of employers.
Kenyon, added:
“Employability is not a bolt-on. It sits at the heart of our curriculum and culture. Our students have access to placements, employer-led projects, and mentoring that bridge the gap between study and career. This research underscores how vital that approach is for students planning their futures.”
The research also comes as universities across the UK adapt to changing expectations from students and employers alike. With graduate outcomes under increasing scrutiny and a growing focus on value for money, City St George’s has recently been recognised as one of the UK’s top 20 universities for employability by the Complete University Guide 2026, highlighting its strong focus on graduate outcomes, career support, and employer engagement. City St George’s continues to invest in initiatives that help students build professional networks, gain real-world experience, and develop skills for long-term success.
Kenyon concluded:
“As a university for business, practice and the professions, we will continue to champion education that doesn’t just inform but transforms – giving our graduates the tools to lead, innovate and thrive.”
Research methodology: The ‘Value of Studying Abroad’ survey was conducted by Arlington Research from 30 May to 6 June 2025. The study surveyed 3,000 respondents across the US, Canada, and India, including 2,250 prospective students aged 18–25.
