You are warmly invited to MCCI's Connect: Bridging Research, Innovation, Education and Professional Practice 'Graphic Refuge' panel event with Dr. Dominic Davies and Professor Candida Rifkind, on Wednesday the 19th of November, at 5pm, at City St. George's University of London. This hybrid panel will celebrate the publication of Graphic Refuge with two short talks from the book's co-authors, followed by comments from two respondents, Ernesto Priego (City) and Mihaela Precup (Bucharest). There will be time for questions and discussion. The event is moderated by Dr. Carolina Matos and supported by Dr. Devina Sarwatay. There will be light refreshments on the day. Abstract
Graphic Refuge is the first in-depth study of comics about refugees, asylum seekers, migrants, and detainees by artists from the Global North and South. Co-written by Dom Davies and Professor Candida Rifkind, the book explores graphic narratives about a range of refugee experiences, from war, displacement, and perilous sea crossings to detention camps, resettlement schemes, and second-generation diasporas.

Bios
Dom Davies is Reader in English at City St George's, University of London. His research explores ways of looking at conflict and war, how we make sense of broken infrastructure, and visual responses to migration and refugees, especially in comics and graphic narratives.

Candida Rifkind is Professor of comics & Canadian writing at the University of Winnipeg in Canada. She specializes in alternative comics and graphic narratives, Canadian popular and political writing, and feminist auto/biography theory. Before Graphic Refuge, she and Dom and co-edited Documenting Trauma in Comics (2020).

Ernesto Priego is Senior Lecturer at the Centre for Human-Computer Interaction Design, where he has explored the role of comics as narrative, conceptual, and speculative design tools. He co-founded The Comics Grid: Journal of Comics Scholarship in 2010 and has co-edited the journal since January 2011.
Mihaela Precup is Associate Professor in the American Studies Program at the University of Bucharest, Romania, where she researches American graphic narratives, memory, trauma and autobiography studies. She is the author of The Graphic Lives of Fathers: Memory, Representation, and Fatherhood in Autobiographical Comics (2020).
