Why did you choose City St George's?
I chose City St George's, University of London for a few key reasons that made it stand out. The University's reputation, particularly the School of Science & Technology, its location within London, and the flexibility to study part-time while working full-time were all important factors for me.
In particular, the MSc in Energy, Environmental Technology and Economics (EETE) appealed to me for its pragmatic, cross-disciplinary approach – which builds the capability required in addressing the complex challenges of the future energy industry.
What has been your favourite module or aspect of your course so far?
My favourite module so far has been the Renewable Energy & Sustainability course. It provided a great foundation, bringing together science, engineering, and economic principles to explore key energy technologies. The course also brought together two MSc modules, allowing us to collaborate with another group of students and make connections across disciplines.
What knowledge and skills has your course helped you develop?
In general, it has been the analytical thinking from an engineering perspective that has been the biggest learning curve and skill gained for me. I've learned how to critically evaluate energy technologies and carry that analysis through to aspects like project finance, economic viability, and sustainability, which has given me a well-rounded and practical approach to solving real-world challenges.
What opportunities and experiences have your School offered you so far?
I’ve had some fantastic opportunities so far!
Two standout experiences have been the solar farm site visit, which showed us renewable energy in action, and the energy trading simulation day with Heuristic Games.
I’ve also really valued the student membership to the Energy Institute - which gives us access to their high-quality resources and industry events, which have helped broaden my energy sector knowledge.
What are your career plans and how has City prepared you for them?
One of my main motivations for pursuing the MSc was to pivot into a career in the energy sector. I believe the EETE course at City is preparing me for this transition - equipping me with a strong understanding of climate and energy topics, helping me develop my analytical mindset, and developing key skills to contribute immediately to the UK’s energy transition.
What advice would you give to someone considering a degree in your subject?
Go for it!
The energy space is evolving so fast, and studying this at university, particularly one like City St George's in central London, is a great way to immerse yourself in the transition, connect with industry, and be part of addressing some of the most pressing global challenges.
If you could do any job related to your subject in the world, what would it be and why?
In the immediate term, I’d love to work in a Strategy Analyst role in an organisation driving the UK’s energy transition, such as the National Grid or the Low Carbon Contracts Company (LCCC). I believe it would be an amazing place to learn and contribute during such a pivotal time for the sector.
Longer term, it would be great to be in a similar strategic role within an international organisation to tackle the global challenge of energy decarbonisation.
