Overview
Lorraine Ashley is a PhD student at the Centre for Maternal and Child Health Research at City, St George's, University of London.
Her PhD uses qualitative methods to explore the postnatal experiences of UK-born Black women. In 2023, she was awarded a studentship to investigate disparities in maternity outcomes experienced by Black women and birthing people in the UK. Her research focuses on both healthcare interactions and broader life experiences as mothers in the first year postnatal. Using Black feminist methodology, her work aims to uncover how historical and structural inequalities continue to shape their care and wellbeing after birth, and how intersecting systems of oppression impact postnatal experiences and access to care.
