About

Overview

Stephanie is Professor of Human-Computer Interaction, Co-Director of the Centre for HCI Design (HCID), Co-Director of Diverse CDT, and a member of the management team for the Institute for Creativity and AI at City St George's. Stephanie's research is rooted in a deep commitment to designing for better futures and this is reflected in her focus on inclusive interaction design and data visualization, co-design and innovative digital technologies for healthcare. She recently led co-design activities on the team that was a semi-finalist in Longitude Prize on Dementia in collaboration with Memory Lane Games. She is currently leading the Dara project which is exploring inclusive data visualisation. She previously led the INCA project which delivered novel digital content creation and curation tools for people with aphasia and has been principal and co-investigator on the EVA Park projects which are exploring accessible virtual worlds for people with aphasia (see full details on the Research tab).

HCID is a leading Human-Computer Interaction group in the UK. Stephanie's leadership of HCID is based on core principles of fostering a positive, productive and creative environment. She supports a collaborative research culture where people are given opportunities to develop their skills creatively as part of a team. This culture is captured in the co-constructed HCID Charter.

Diverse CDT, the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Diversity in Data Visualization, is training the next generation of researchers in diversity-conscious data visualisation and design practices. Stephanie led on the Diverse CDT application, working with nine colleagues at City St George's and the University of |Warwick. Diverse CDTwas funded as an “innovative” CDT; we have introduced innovations (PhD by structured components, digital thesis, cohort reflection and action-learning sets, diversity initiatives) to address documented barriers to doctoral study. Stephanie has also contributed to the successful doctoral programme at City through roles including Chair of the Research Degrees Committee, Assistant Dean for Research Students and Senior Tutor for Research, and has supervised 17 PhD students to successful completion as first or second supervisor.

Stephanie established and chaired the Department of Computer Science Research Ethics Committee, has been Joint Programme Director of the MSc in HCI Design and is a member of the newly established Women++ group.

Research

Title of thesis: Reinventing the Future of Financial Technologies with Autistic Adults

February 2024 - January 2028

Summary of research

The introduction of digital technologies into personal money management has unintended and sometimes adverse consequences for citizens. These exacerbate financial exclusion and affect disproportionally those who struggle financially or find themselves in vulnerable circumstances.

This PhD will research how the downsides of digitising personal finance could be tackled through design, through participatory design methods and in collaboration with autistic adults.

Given the challenging life and financial circumstances of autistic adults, it is important to assess whether existing financial technologies and services are suitable for their needs and preferences, and whether they are resulting in stigmatising or discriminatory treatment.

Collaborating with autistic adults will yield diverse and innovative perspectives to critically assess the current state of financial technologies and push the boundaries of their design.
