Keynote lectures/speeches (5)
- KEYNOTE ADDRESS to the "2nd International Conference on the Right of Freedom of Expression in the Digital Age". University of Nicosia, Cyprus (2017). The right of freedom of expression and the principle of a free press are the pillars of contemporary democracy. As digital forms of communication continue to spread, the limits on freedom of expression are seemingly more palpable, particularly in certain parts of the world. Professional journalists are struggling to (re)establish and maintain public trust and confidence in their work, whilst the emergence of participatory journalism challenges the status and values of the profession.
This two-day conference offers a timely space for scholars and practitioners to explore the broader issue of freedom of expression, with a particular interest in the institutional right of freedom of the media. We would like to investigate whether the inalienable right of freedom of expression and its corollary right of freedom of the media/press are limitless and boundless in the digital age; whether digital forms of communication have revolutionized the mode, the methods and the means of journalism. - Privacy, Freedom of Speech and the Journalism Profession, University of Nicosia, 3 April 2017. Questions addressed:1. Media bias is running ever more rampant…Is it at all realistic to hope for an unbiased coverage of events?
2. Isn’t the media more often than not pushing an agenda?
3. Take a news source – it should be as unbiased as possible when presenting the news. One doesn’t want a political spin - just the facts. But is that at all possible?
4. Of course, the problem with the news media being impartial is that things don't happen in a vacuum. It's almost impossible to report on events without talking about why things are happening when reporting... he information itself is only a tiny portion of what the news business is about : it’s the packaging, the personalities and presentation. It’s also ultimately the responsibility of the consumer of the news to weed out what's fact and what's a biased statement, surely?
5. Can a journalist be inherently objective? Is it a moral issue? Or professional?
