About

Overview

Andy is an internationally acclaimed expert on the topic of the cultural industries. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, and an Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences. He has held academic appointments at University College London (Bartlett School of Planning) and LSE (Geography, and Urban Research Centre), King’s College, London (Culture, Media and Creative Industries). He joined City University as Professor of Cultural Economy in 2013. Since 2024 he is Emeritus professor of Cultural economy at City University.

He has published over 200 items: books, chapters and articles.

Andy specializes the analysis of the cultural industries in the US, Europe and Japan. This research has two strands. The first focuses on the urban spatial clustering of cultural industries; he is particularly interested in the social and economic dynamics of clustering. The second strand concerns the definition and measurement of employment in the cultural, or creative, industries. He has developed definitions of the cultural sector that are used as standard measures by UNCTAD and UNESCO.

Andy has had major recent research projects funded by UK research councils. He was co-principal investigator for a major grant of £4.5m to develop a Creative Economy Hub in London. He was a member of a Euro5m H2020 project CICERONE which explored cultural production chains in Europe, and the CIRCE project on creative diversity (London Lab).

Andy has worked as a consultant or advisor for national and urban policy makers, and the EU, UNESCO, UNCTAD, World Bank and WIPO, and the British Council.

Andy is UNESCO chair for Global Creative Economy (2022-2026)

Research

Research areas

Andy's research specialisms are: the analysis of the cultural industries in the US, Europe and Japan. This research has three strands. The first focuses on the urban spatial clustering of cultural industries; he is particularly interested in the social and economic dynamics of clustering. He has done case studies of the film, music, advertising, computer games, and fashion industries. The second strand concerns the definition and measurement of employment in the cultural, or creative, industries. He has developed definitions of the cultural sector that are used as standard measures by UNCTAD and UNESCO. The third strand of concern is policy making for the cultural and creative industries.

Andy has worked as a consultant, or advisor, for national and urban policy makers, and the EU, UNESCO, UNCTAD, and WIPO, and the British Council. He has had major recent research projects funded by UK research councils and is currently co-principal investigator for a major grant of £4.5m to develop a Creative Economy Hub in London. Andy directs the Place, Work, Knowledge strand of work. Andy is also part of the EU Cost action on virtual work.

PhD supervision

Andy currently supervises six students, on the following topics: 'non creative' cultural labour, European cultural policy, gastronomy and tourism in Turkey, the governance of museums and social inclusion, the mobility of labour in the fashion design industry (Taipei, Shanghai and London), and global cities and culture.
