Overview

Dr Adrienne Yong is a Reader in Law at The City Law School. Her research interests are in EU citizenship, immigration law and human rights of marginalised groups from a intersectional feminist perspective.

Dr Yong's research primarily focuses on the intersectional impact of gender and migrant status on vulnerable women's rights. She has considered the effect of the UK's withdrawal from the EU and how the EU Settlement Scheme disproportionately affects vulnerable immigrant women. She continues to examine how the new immigration landscape in the UK affects vulnerable women at risk of or experiencing domestic abuse, focusing specifically on how migrant victim-survivors of domestic abuse are excluded from protection under the framework of immigration law in the UK. Dr Yong is the co-chair of a community of practice for migrant women's rights, which includes legal practitioners, by and for charitable organisations and local and governmental authorities, as well as academics from law and other disciplines.

Shaping the world through research with Dr Adrienne Yong

Dr Yong has presented her research nationally and internationally at various conferences. She has been quoted by the Financial Times, The Economist, NBC News, Wall Street Journal, New York Times & Al Jazeera English and has appeared on live TV with France24 and Rai7 (Italy) to speak about Brexit and citizens' rights. She has also given oral evidence as an expert witness before the House of Commons Home Affairs Committee for their inquiry on the EU Settlement Scheme (Feb 2019).

Dr Yong is the book reviews editor of the Journal of Immigration, Nationality and Asylum Law (JIANL). She is the Lead for Global Engagement in CLS and co-steer for the interdisciplinary Migration & Border Violence Research Hub, based in the School of Policy and Global Affairs and The City Law School.

Dr Yong is the module leader GELLB core module European Union Law and LLB2 elective module Law, Rights & Context. She also teaches LLB2 modules Foundations of EU Law and Immigration Law. She has previously been module leader for LLB2 core module Foundations of EU Law and held roles as the Postgraduate Assessments Officer (2019-20), Undergraduate Assessments Officer (2018-19) and PGR methodology training coordinator (2017-18). She also co-convened the EU & Competition Law subject section for the Society for Legal Scholars from 2021-2023.
