Multidisciplinary Symposium in Functional Disorders Course overview

We expect that learners who complete this course will have a better understanding of the manifestations and proposed mechanisms of functional disorders across different organ systems.

This course will also challenge the tendency for professionals from different categories to work in “silos”, as we genuinely believe in the advantage of sharing expertise and learning from different experiences.

Finally, this short course will offer an opportunity for discussion, net-working and “cross pollination” of ideas/concepts between different specialities and professional backgrounds. We hope to foster new collaborative work in clinical care and research.

Who is it for?

Postgraduate, targeting medical doctors and allied healthcare professionals interested in functional symptoms and working across multiple specialities.

Timetable

This hybrid symposium will be held at the Tooting Campus, though participants can also join online. The event lasts a full day and precise times will be given closer to the date.

What will I learn?

Learners who complete the course will:

  • learn and compare manifestations of functional disorders related to different organ systems
  • learn and compare proposed mechanisms of abnormal perception in functional disorders related to different organ systems
  • distinguish physical symptoms related to functional disorders from those resulting from mental health disorders
  • critically reappraise accuracy (and utility) of the traditional dichotomy between “mind” and “body” in the context of abnormalities of perception.

Tutor

  • Dr Tiago Teodoro

    Consultant neurologist

    Dr Teodoro is a consultant neurologist with specialist interests in functional neurological disorder (FND), movement disorders, and botulinum toxin treatment for movement disorders. He has been involved in the specialist FND clinic at St George’s University Hospitals (London) since 2016, initially as a fellow under the supervision of Professor Mark Edwards, and subsequently as a consultant neurologist.

    Dr Teodoro completed a PhD on the mechanisms underlying functional neurological symptoms, focusing on biomarkers of abnormal attention, and remains involved in clinical research. He co-chairs the South-West London and Surrey regional FND network, aiming to improve multidisciplinary care for FND across the region.

    In addition to his work with FND, Dr Teodoro has set up a weekly botulinum toxin clinic in Surrey (Ashford and St Peter’s Hospital) offering EMG-guided and non-guided injections for movement disorders, including cervical and craniofacial dystonia, as well as more challenging indications such as limb tremor. He also runs a monthly movement disorders clinic at the same hospital and remains intensely engaged in general neurology.
