Overview
Dr Ohemaa Nkansa-Dwamena is an Associate Professor on the Professional Doctorate (DPsych) in Counselling Psychology, and a practicing Counselling Psychologist. In her role on the DPsych, Ohemaa is module leader for the Year 1 Context, Diversity and Professional Standards module, Year 1 Professional Development and Supervision module and Year 2 Cross Cultural and Anti-Discriminatory Practice module. She supervises doctoral research, co-facilitates service user involvement on the programme and is lead and personal tutor for Year One of the programme.
She is co-chair of the Race Equity Implementation Committee at City and Principal Investigator of the Network for Racial Justice project on 'Tackling Racism, Exclusion and Racial Injustices' at City.
Her research interests lie in the use of qualitative methods to study a range of applied counselling psychology topics, with experience predominantly in phenomenological approaches. Particular interests include multiple identity negotiation (including those pertaining to racial, sexual and gender identities), minority identities, intersectionality and issues related to race, African diasporan mental health, culture and mental health.
Dr Nkansa-Dwamena currently works in private practice. She has previously held psychologist and senior psychologist roles in the NHS, across primary and secondary care teams, higher education counselling services and positions in third sector organizations.
Dr Nkansa-Dwamena has a BA (Hons) degree in Applied Psychology from University of Sussex, completed her DPsych in Counselling Psychology at City, University of London, and has advanced certification and clinical supervisor accreditation in schema therapy.
