About

Overview

Dr Ladan Hashemi holds a dual role at City St George’s University of London. As a Senior Research Fellow in Health Sciences at the Violence and Society Centre, School of Policy & Global Affairs, she leads the global strand and coordinates the Lifecourse Working Group for the UKPRP-funded VISION consortium on Violence, Health and Society.

She is also a Senior Lecturer in the Sociology of Health at the School of Health and Medical Sciences, contributing to several modules in the Department of Medicine and leading the Comparative Health Systems module within the Global Health team.

Ladan’s interdisciplinary research combines advanced quantitative methods from social science and epidemiology, with a focus on gender, domestic violence, and their impact on health and society.

She holds an honorary position at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, where she previously worked as a Senior Research Fellow. There, she led an Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) study and served as lead analyst for the 2019 New Zealand Family Violence Study (2017–2023). Her work in New Zealand has explored the prevalence, intergenerational impacts, and population trends of interpersonal violence, alongside the effects of ACEs and positive experiences on health.

Ladan has developed a strong track record of policy-relevant, impactful research and has successfully led collaborative, grant-funded projects. She is currently working with domestic violence service providers in Iran (her home country) and the UK to generate evidence that informs policy and public dialogue.

She has received funding from the UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (International Science Partnerships Fund) to build an evidence base for gender-based violence prevention in Iran. She was also awarded Higher Education Innovation Funding (HEIF) to lead an animated social media campaign raising awareness of gender-based violence. This project brought together a multidisciplinary team of academics and artists to produce several animations for public engagement in Iran and globally. [YouTube link]
