Overview

Jay Dunstan has over twenty‑five years’ experience within the cultural and creative industries, with a professional background in advertising, post‑production broadcast television and corporate communications. His academic research is informed by Pierre Bourdieu’s theoretical framework, with particular attention to concepts of field theory, capital, habitus and symbolic power. His work examines how professional identities, creative labour and institutional practices are shaped within the Contemporary Cultural Industries (CCI). A central focus of his research is the interaction between symbolic capital, professional agency and forms of cultural capital operating across creative fields. His work is directed towards producing research that contributes to policy development, institutional governance and sensitive professional practice.

At City St George's, he has contributed to employability and corporate engagement initiatives that connect students with industry partners. Through developing employer relationships and supporting career-focused learning opportunities, he helps students gain valuable professional experience to equip them for employment. His work is focused on strengthening links between higher education and industry, ensuring that students are equipped with the skills, knowledge and networks needed to succeed in their future careers.
