About

Overview

Prof. Jason Dykes directs the giCentre at City, University of London where he works to develop maps and graphics that help people think. This research, involving design concepts, theoretical frameworks, algorithms, and human response experiments, is described in about 20 papers published in IEEE Transactions on Visualization & Computer Graphics in the last decade or so and has been recognised with various national and international research prizes, including four consecutive Best Paper awards at GIS Research UK and ‘Honorable Mentions’ at IEEE Information Visualization (2009, 2010, 2016, 2018). A comprehensive research outputs is available through the excellent DBLP.

Jason led the ICA Commission on GeoVisualization and has been influential at IEEE VIS as a member of IEEE Information Visualization Steering Cttee (2014-19), the IEEE VIS Executive Cttee (2017-21), and as papers co-chair IEEE Information Visualization 2012-13. He has received funding from most of the UK’s research councils over the years, and from the EU and is Associate Editor of both IEEE Transactions on Visualization & Computer Graphics and the new and rather exciting Journal of Visualization and Interaction. Lead author of ‘Exploring Geovisualization’ (Dykes et al., 2005) and a paper describing the UK visualization community’s response to the COVID pandemic published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, he appears in the Milestones in the History of Thematic Cartography, Statistical Graphics & Data Visualization along with some of the most famous names in science.

He is co-director of DIVERSE-CDT , the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Diversity in Data Visualization, a collaboration between City St George's, the University of Warwick and diverse partners in which students will collaborate to develop knowledge and skills about Data Visualization for Exploration, Reflection and Scientific Explanation in a range of contexts and across a range of domains.

Teaching

I teach on a number of modules at City, usually with a geographic and visualization bias! These include the Coding BootCamp for our year 1 undergraduates, SG2047 Visualizing Society which is part of the QSTEP programme in social science and EPM948 Data Presentation.

I am personal tutor to students on our MSc Data Science and BSc Computer Science courses.

I supervise undergraduate and postgraduate projects. These usually involve designing, developing and evaluating visualization methods. They are often undertaken with external clients as we explore data sets and the ways in which interactive visualization can help them understand their data. Excellent projects can result in academic publications - and this is always an important but ambitious aim.

I have supervised 8 PhDs to completion and acted as an advisor, mentor and examiner on many more PhDs.

Teaching Awards and Recognition

I have won grants and awards at City for teaching including an 'Innovations in Teaching Award' a 'Teaching & Learning Development Grant', a 'Learning Development Project Award' and was named the 'Research Supervisor of the Year' in the 2020 Student Union Awards!

In 2005 I was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship by the Higher Education Academy, awarded at a glittering ceremony by the Minister for Higher Education.

Teaching Research

I participate in education innovation and research, having participated in education panels at IEEE VIS and published papers on Teaching Information Visualization (Kerren et al, 2008) and Challenges and Opportunities in Data Visualization Education (Bach et al., 2023). Both papers followed Dagstuhl seminars on the subject in 2007 and again in 2022.

Research

Research Focus

I am Professor of Visualization in the Department of Computer Science at City, University of London, where I have directed and co-directed the giCentre for over a decade.

My research focuses on designing visual methods and tools for exploring, analysing and presenting information with an emphasis on geographic information.
I design, develop and evaluate novel dynamic maps that help generate insights from data and communicate trends in phenomena from a diverse range of domains.
I work on the algorithms and the methodologies that contribute to this activity.

As such I have interests in Cartography, Information Visualization, Data Visualization, Design, GIScience and Human Computer Interaction. I have developed software and ideas that explore cartographic design possibilities for geovisualization. This includes software, such as 'cdv' and 'panoraMap', and novel exploratory views, such as geowigs, geo-centric parallel coordinates plots, spatially ordered treemaps, ODmaps, BallotMaps, AttributeSignatures and FAVVEs. 'cdv' - the cartographic data visualizer demonstrates my early ideas and appears in the Milestones in the History of Thematic Cartography, Statistical Graphics and Data Visualization.

The main body of my work is reported in more than 20 papers published in IEEE Transactions in Visualization and Computer Graphics since 2007. A comprehensive research outputs is available through the excellent DBLP.

Research Grants

I have been awarded research funding by various bodies to support this work including:

  • EPSRC - RAMP VIS - Making Visual Analytics an Integral Part of the Technological Infrastructure for Combating COVID-19, where I coordinated a sub-team and lead the major publication

  • EPSRC - DIVA - DIVA: Data Intensive Visual Analytics - Provenance and Uncertainty in Human Terrain Analysis, where I lead major work-packages

  • EU - VALCRI - Visual Analytics for Sense-making in CRiminal Intelligence analysis, which won a Security Innovation Commercialisation Award from the Eu in 2022

  • EU - ALGOVIS - Algorithmic Approaches to Spatially-Informed Information Visualization, a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action in which I mentored ECR Wouter Meulemans

  • EU - VISMASTER - Visual Analytics - Mastering the Information Age, a pan-European network that established the need for Visual Analytics as expressed in the book Mastering the Information Age Solving Problems with Visual Analytics (Keim, et al., 2010)

Research Service

I have served on the Steering and Executive Committees of IEEE Information Visualization having been papers co-chair in 2012 & 2013 and conference chair in 2014 where I was also involved in organising a workshop and a bike ride.

I regularly review papers for a variety of publications in the GIScience, visualization and broader information domains, including: the International Journal of Geographical Information Science, Computers and GeoSciences, the Journal of Documentation, JASIST, IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, Information Visualization and Computational Statistics.

I am a Associate Editor of both IEEE Transactions on Visualization & Computer Graphics and The Journal of Visualization and Interaction, having been along-serving member of the Editorial Board of The Cartographic Journal.

I regularly examine PhDs, review grants and produce reports on applications for tenure and research chair positions.
