Based on research largely conducted at Bayes and published in international journals such as the Journal of Retirement, this faculty-led online alumni event will look at how conventional, well-established investment ideas for long-term saving are being challenged by recent research, which strongly advocates staying largely invested in equities right through late into retirement.
In so doing, this approach defies the popular myth of the superiority of so-called Target Date investing, which advocates a gradual shift into 'safer' assets such as government bonds and into which a very large percentage (over one half in the US) of retirement savings flows.
Our results offer the surprising conclusion that with simple appropriate portfolio construction methods retirees can be the fortunate recipients of a 50% uplift in retirement income, with no increase in illiquidity or transactions costs….and no venturing into opaque ‘alternative assets!
Stephen Thomas, Professor of Finance at Bayes Business School, will run this online event, which is designed to shed new light on the area and spark debate among participating alumni.
NB: Registered alumni will receive the Zoom link required to take part by email 24 hours in advance of the event. These webinar connection details are not to be shared.
