Introduction to the Principles of Prehospital Care Course overview
No previous experience of working in the prehospital care setting is required.
A team of experienced doctors and paramedics will deliver a mixture of teaching and simulation to achieve the learning outcomes of the course.
Who is it for?
This course is aimed at hospital doctors aspiring to apply for a role in a prehospital care system.
Benefits
The course is intended as an introduction to prehospital care, aimed at covering the basics of how to approach patients clinically, an understanding of the prehospital environment, and a background to how prehospital systems work.
Course candidates are guided through a broad curriculum covering key topics by an expert faculty of both prehospital doctors and paramedics, with an emphasis on developing clinical and non-technical skills via a wide range of teaching methods, including practical hands on workshops and simulations as well as lectures and small group discussions.
The course is ideal for those who want to pursue a career in PHEM, prepare for PHEM applications or qualifications such as the Diploma in Immediate Medical Care.
What will I learn?
You will be encouraged to undertake an elective observation day in a prehospital care system and share your experience as part of the module. Please note that the simulation element of this course may require you to physically manipulate equipment in unfamiliar surroundings. The elective element may require you to attend events or emergencies in the prehospital setting.
A learning portfolio will be required to be completed and submitted in order for each student to successfully pass the course.
Assessment and certificates
The course will combine a range of educational methodologies to deliver the curriculum:
- face-to-face days to deliver prehospital skills and knowledge via lectures, workshops, case-based discussion, practical skills and simulation. This will be facilitated by a multi-disciplinary team of paramedics and doctors, all with extensive prehospital and teaching experience
- practice placement will include the educational guidance to promote learning and reflective practice in a variety of observational exposures in different prehospital settings. Tutorials will use a case debriefing approach to share placement experience.
