Overview
Sam Penry MA PGCert BSc(Hons) SFHEA MAcadMEd FRSPH, is an experienced HCPC registered, diagnostic radiographer and university lecturer within the School of Health and Medical Sciences (SHMS). In addition to his full-time role as a Senior Lecturer in Diagnostic Radiography at City, St George’s University of London, he serves as the Departmental Lead for Employability. He is the External Examiner for the University of Liverpool (Diagnostic Radiography) and is a regular Peer-Reviewer for the Journal ‘Radiography’. He also works as an Advisor and Expert Reviewer for 'cancer tests and scans' at Cancer Research UK. Sam is an Advisor to the professional body, the 'Society and College of Radiographers' as a member of the Diagnostic Imaging Advisory Group (DIAG). Within DIAG, he is able to provide advice and expert analysis regarding the strategic direction of the profession, debate policy and evaluate its impact on the profession and support service improvements within the interprofessional enviroment of diagnostic imaging.
He has formerly held the positions of Programme Director and Clinical Director for the Radiography (Diagnostic Imaging) programme at City, University of London. He also held the role of Admissions Tutor for two BSc (Hons) programmes - Diagnostic Imaging and Radiotherapy & Oncology, where he was responsible for strategic decisions, leadership and management on matters relating to admissions and recruitment.
Sam is recognised across his profession. One of his most notable accomplishments was becoming the youngest recipient of the prestigious “United Kingdom Radiographer of the Year" Award while working full-time within the NHS. This was awarded by the professional body, the Society and College of Radiographers (2017). He has also received the 'Enhancement of student experience award' for his teaching (2020, 2021, 2022, 2025) and has received several commendations from the student union (2020, 2023), CEO of the Mid and South Essex NHS Trusts (2016, 2017) and service-users of the NHS (2011-2018). In addition he has recieved the 'Educational Innovator' trophy (2025) and was awarded 'Outstanding Reviewer' by the Radiography Journal / Elsiever (2024).
Prior to joining City in 2018, he worked at Mid Essex Hospitals NHS Trust for seven years, where he took on a number of roles and responsibilities. Whilst predominately working as a Computed Tomography (CT) specialist within the radiology department, he joined a project to become the first diagnostic radiographer to coordinate the Multi Disciplinary Diagnostic Centre (MDC) for the vague symptoms cancer pathway in the UK. His 'pioneering role' within this innovative project allowed him to independently perform patient consultations, put patients onto the pathway, request and perform CT imaging, organise and discuss patients at MDT meetings and allowed him to give patients their results. Under IR(ME)R legislation he was recognised as being a referrer as well as being both an operator and practitioner.
Sam has a wealth of experience relating to X-ray and CT and has a particular interest in Trauma.
Over the years he has published research articles on CT and has also written trust policy on CT Intravenous (IV) contrast administration. He has also held positions at the Society of Radiographers. He has also contributed to the radiography profession, as an Academic Review Panel Member (For Clark's Positioning in Radiography Textbook) and has helped in the development and validation process for the 'Access to HE Diploma - Radiography' qualification as a validation panel member for Gateway qualifications.
Within the university, he has introduced innovative and effective, learning and teaching approaches.
Some of these innovations include the design and creation of:
• An interactive online game (the first of its kind within the department) to allow students to apply their knowledge to real-life scenarios that they may face in the future, when working in the radiology. This game was shown to improve the decision-making skills of students, in relation to advance trauma life support (ATLS).
• >20, interactive HD videos for students to complete at their own pace, to build on their knowledge and understanding. Many of the videos include, question-based activities and re-cap on core principles to help consolidate learning. Topics include Image interpretation (14) Mechanisms of Injury (4) and ATLS (5).
• A series of “Preliminary Clinical Evaluation (PCE)” templates, to support students with their image interpretation and PCE skills – a first of its kind, which led to an increase in academic performance.
In 2021/22, Sam’s image interpretation module, became the highest student-scoring module of the year, across all programmes, within the department of radiography.
Whilst Sam teaches across all year groups at City (Undergraduate, Post-graduate and Foundation-year), he is the module leader for the RD3034 Image Interpretation module (level 6), RDM019 Clinical Applications of CT module (level 7), RD3036 Management & Advancement of Radiographic Practice module (level 6) and #RadInd Radiography Induction module (level 4).
