German Beginners Part 1 and 2 Course overview
Want to quickly learn a new language? German is a great option. With similar grammatical rules to English, you’ve already got a head start. Spend 10 weeks completely immersing yourself to become confident communicating very quickly.
We’ll focus on everyday German you might use when you visit a restaurant or make travel arrangements. Our native tutors will explain different grammatical structures, and they’ll also explore elements of German culture too.
If you enjoy this combined course, you can move on to part 3 in the summer term to continue learning and expand your German vocabulary.

Timetable
Take part in two two-hour lessons a week from January term to cover part 1 and 2 of our beginners syllabus. Over 10 weeks, you’ll join us for 40 hours of teaching in total.

What will I learn?
For this combined course, we focus on preparing you for everyday conversations, whether that’s booking a hotel room or discussing your likes and dislikes with friends.
By the end of the course, you’ll be able to
- introduce yourself and talk about your family, jobs, professions and hobbies
- master the alphabet and German pronunciation
- use numbers, ask for and tell the time
- ask for information
- describe things
- express likes and dislikes
- ask and give prices when shopping
- book a hotel room
- talk about duties at work/home
- say what you can do in your town.
We’ll teach you grammatical structures including
- questions, answers and statements
- formal and informal structures (du/sie)
- present tense of regular and irregular verbs as well as the verbs "to have" (haben) and "to be" (sein)
- negative sentences and negation of nouns (nicht/kein)
- gender, articles and plural of nouns
- some personal pronouns, possessive articles and accusative case
- measurement noun some comparative (gern/lieber)
- word order
- separable verbs
- modal verbs, prepositions with accusative and dative case.
We’ll also cover chapter one to seven of the Willkommen course book.
Assessment and certificates
We’ll award you an official City St George's, University of London certificate if you attend over 70 per cent of the classes. It’s not formally accredited but will make your CV stand out when applying for jobs.
Teaching
Our tutors know the best way to consolidate your knowledge is to make learning interactive. For each session, they use a mix of
- pair and group work
- roleplay
- pronunciation and intonation
- classroom discussion
- grammar in context.

Eligibility
You don’t need any knowledge of German to join this combined course. If you’ve already reached beginner’s level, we’d recommend German Lower Intermediate (Year 2).
English requirements
You will need a good level of spoken and written English to enrol on this course.
