Leadership in Organisations Course overview
This module will present the basics of leadership in organisations in a structured and interactive way. It has been designed for participants from all corners of the air transport industry, from all sorts of functions. The main reasons for recognising and developing leadership skills in any organisation are: trust and confidence in top leadership is the single most reliable predictor of employee satisfaction and effective communication by leadership is key to winning trust and confidence.
This module will enable you to:
- Analyse leadership models and discuss their functionality
- Compare and evaluate effective leadership and define success components
- Define successful leadership behaviour
- Appraise different leadership styles and their effectiveness
- Critically discuss the impact of national culture on leadership. and of gender on leadership.
Who is it for?
Anyone in any sector of aviation who aspires to a leadership role, or already in a leadership who wants to become more effective.
Timetable
Module teaching usually begins at 9am and finishes at 5pm each day, with time for breaks. If there is any change to these timings, you will be informed before the start of the module.

On successful completion of this module, you will be expected to be able to:
- Critically analyse leadership structures in aviation companies
- Define and discuss leadership principles
- Research for yourself and others the key features of leadership
- Critically discuss change management and its implementation
- Evaluate, develop and synthesise a clear, logical proposal for leadership structure;
- Formulate and test concepts and hypotheses of leadership models
- Select and apply appropriate leadership styles
- Cultivate a critical attitude towards the need for trust and confidence in organisational leadership
- Critically evaluate professional development areas for leadership in self and others.
Assessment and certificates
During the module you will be exposed to a variety of interactive learning and teaching methodologies, including:
- Lecture style content presentations
- Guided multilateral debate and discussion sessions around leadership strategies
- Scenario development around given leadership structures
- Recent news article evaluations in light of the modules’ subject
- Role play sessions putting you in an unfamiliar role within a given airline situation
- Real life example sharing related to actual leadership and assessment situations.
The goal is to stimulate active participation in the module by creating an interesting and engaging learning environment. You will be encouraged to contribute to the module through active participation in the classroom setting. You will be asked to relate to and draw upon your own experience and to share this with others
You will be asked to submit a reflective journal following completion of the module to illustrate your learning. You will not receive a mark for the reflective journal.
Following successful completion of the module, you will receive a certificate of participation.

Eligibility
Applicants are expected to have professional experience within the aviation industry.
There is no prior knowledge required for this CPD module, other than a general awareness of the aviation industry practices. There is a pre-reading resource list that will help you prepare for the course.
English requirements
For those students whose first language is not English the following qualification is also required:
- IELTS: 6.5 (A minimum of 6.0 in all four test components is preferable).
