    You will gain in-depth knowledge of recent advances in the theory and practice of Robotics, Machine Learning, Image Processing, Human-Machine Teaming, Communication, and Control.

    You will also develop valuable software and hardware skills via extensive lab work in programming and embedded systems design, through industrial design projects.

    In addition to the technical part of the programme, you will be introduced to the legal and regulations framework of Autonomous Systems, and the ethical issues arising from their deployment.

    The programme is suited for new graduates and Engineering professionals who want to advance their understanding of the field and are interested in pursuing a career in one of the emerging application areas related to Systems Autonomy and Artificial Intelligence.

    Duration:

    • Full-time: 12 months
    • Part-time: 24 months (up to 28 months)

    Modules:

    • Core modules: 9

    Full-time: attend all the taught modules during terms one and two, and complete your dissertation project within the 12-month period of the degree.

    Part-time: attend half the modules in a first 12-month period, followed by the other half the next year and complete your dissertation project in the second year.

    Term one

    • Advanced Signal Processing and Communications (15 credits)

      This module will introduce you to the advanced concepts of signal processing, telecommunications and avionics. You will learn about complex signal processing techniques, information theory, and advanced topics both in telecommunications and avionics.

    • Robotics, Imaging and Vision (15 credits)

      In this module you will learn the basic principles of image processing and computer vision and the scientific and practical aspects of classical and modern robotics. In addition, you will develop software /hardware engineering skills and will have access to the updated research literature in this field. The main aim of the module is the integration of software, hardware and instrumentation technologies in the field of imaging, vision and robotics.

    • Engineering Programming (15 credits)

      This module helps you develop skills in two popular programming languages, Python and C++ through lectures and laboratory work, with emphasis on engineering applications. Fundamental concepts of software Engineering are also taught which will help you to translate a informal verbal or algorithmic description of a process to a working computer programme along with its implementation, debugging and testing.

    • System Dynamics, Propulsion and Control (15 credits)

      In this module you will learn the basic principles of Autonomous Vehicles, including Dynamic Modelling, Propulsion, Stability, Control Design and Navigation, with emphasis on Automotive vehicles, mobile robots and UAV’s. You will be taught the scientific and practical aspects of classical and modern design techniques with a focus on autonomous systems applications.

    Term two

    • Embedded Systems (15 credits)

      This module helps you develop skills in embedded programming through lectures and laboratory work, with emphasis on engineering applications. Fundamental concepts of software and hardware embedded programming will be taught which will help you to translate the algorithms designed on particular applications into the dedicated embedded hardware to real time operations.

    • Machine/Machine, Human/Machine Teaming (15 credits)

      This is a core module on the MSc of Robotics, AI and Autonomous Systems. In this module you will learn the basic principles of interaction and teaming between human and machine (robot) and between machine and machine is introduced and studied.

    • Machine Learning (15 credits)

      In this module you will learn the basic principles of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools for engineering application and more specifically Machine learning (ML) concepts. You will be taught the scientific and practical aspects of classical and modern ML techniques with a focus on autonomous systems application and other applications.

    • AI for Engineering Design Projects (15 credits)

      This is a core module on the MSc of Robotics, AI and Autonomous Systems and is also a module for the MEng Biomedical engineering and MEng Electrical Engineering. In this module you will develop understanding of the basic principles of adopting AI technologies in engineering design developments, learn about the structured engineering design process and engage in three AI based design projects for autonomous systems and other engineering applications.

    • Regulations and Ethics for Autonomous Systems (5 credits)

      Autonomous systems take informed decisions in complex environments, often characterised by considerable uncertainty. This gives rise to important ethical and safety-related issues for engineers and regulators regarding their design and deployment. This is not only important in its own right, but will also enhance the acceptance of these systems from the general public which will help to distribute widely economic and social benefits. The module is based on seminars delivered by social scientists and practitioners in the field and will vary from year to year.

    Dissertation

    • Individual Project (60 credits)

      This module is a self-directed study, which offers you the opportunity to clearly identify a problem or requirement, justify why it is worth exploring or implementing, develop a method suitable for the work, apply this method, analyse the results and evaluate their implications.

    Teaching and assessment

    You will learn through a series of lectures, design projects, tutorials, laboratory work, and seminars. Lectures and seminars provide a solid theoretical understanding and will be delivered by Academics and Industrialists with expert knowledge in the field.

    Design projects, tutorials and labs provide practical training and develop skills in:

    • Programming
    • Embedded Systems Design
    • Robotics
    • Machine Learning
    • Image Processing
    • Human-Machine Teaming
    • Communication
    • Control.

    Assessment is based on marks obtained throughout the year for your coursework, class tests, end of year exams and dissertation.

    Your dissertation provides a stimulating and challenging opportunity to apply your knowledge and develop a deep understanding in a specialised topic of your choice. Dissertations can be research or industry inspired, allowing you to prepare for your future career choices.

    You will also have access to world-class facilities, including a full robotics laboratory, the arena, which is the largest indoor flying space in London where students can fly and test their work, and the unique Hardware In the Loop (HIL) robotics facility to validate real-time industrial robotic concept designs.

    Scholarships worth £2,000 are offered to outstanding postgraduate students, who are applying for a course in Computer Science or Engineering. You do not need to make a separate application. You will be automatically considered based on your master’s programme application form with your personal statement, and your supporting documents.

    For September 2025 intake, the deadline for receipt of applications for consideration for these Scholarships is 30 April 2025.

    You can apply for the Global STEM Leadership Masters Scholarship, which could cover up to 75% of your tuition fees. The scholarships are available to students from the UK and overseas, including from the EU.

    Women from Albania, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Turkey, or Uzbekistan may apply for The British Council Scholarship for Women in STEM. Economic support would include tuition fees, living stipend, travel costs, visa and health coverage fees.

    To be eligible for the discount you must have successfully completed an undergraduate or postgraduate degree at legacy City, University of London or legacy St George's, University of London.

      The programme is designed for those who have a second class degree, as minimum, in engineering and computer science. Applicants with a background in mathematics or life sciences with good mathematical skills (in linear algebra and calculus in particular) will also be considered. Applicants with strong work experience in computing or engineering may also be considered.

      Competence in an object-oriented programming language (preferable Python) is desirable.

    • Zimbabwe

    English language requirements

    If you are an applicant whose first language is not English, the following qualifications are required:

    • IELTS academic test with an overall score of 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any component.
    • TOEFL test with a score of at least 90, with a minimum of 19 in Listening, 20 in Reading, 19 in Writing and 22 in Speaking.

    You will be expected to submit the following:

    • For all applicants, please upload your degree certificate and transcript of marks from your first degree (if you do not have your final results at the time of making your application, please upload a provisional certificate/interim transcript of marks). A transcript is required in order to have your application processed.

    • Please upload a detailed personal statement outlining why you wish to study this specific course, at City, University of London, as well as explaining how your past studies have prepared you for this course and how it will help you to progress in your career.
