    Public Health and Specialist Community Nursing MSc/PGDip Course overview

    The programme of study takes you through a specialist community public health or community nursing specialist trajectory which allows you to consider health attainment, promotion, and illness prevention in the context of local, regional, national and international public health, health and social care policy and practice.

    You will learn about the latest theory and practice influencing service provision and critically evaluate approaches to developing and delivering effective services to enhance your role.

    Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN)

    This PGDip SCPHN pathways component of the programme are designed to meet the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (the NMC) proficiencies for SCPHN (NMC 2022) leading to registerable qualifications in either:

    Community Nursing Specialist Practice Qualifications (SPQ)

    The PGDip SPQ pathway components of the programme are designed to meet the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) proficiencies for community nursing specialist practice qualifications (SPQ) (NMC 2022) leading to a recordable qualification in one of the following:

    • Community Children’s Nursing
    • Community Nursing in Health and Social Care
    • District Nursing
    • General Practice Nursing

    It is recognised that the students who commence the programme are unique and from a diverse range of backgrounds, with existing experience and attitudes to life. The emphasis on transferable skills in the curriculum ensures that the rich resources you bring to your learning are nurtured and developed.

    At City St George’s, University of London you will have the opportunity to develop knowledge, skills and attitudes in public health and community settings that are characterised by ethnic diversity, high levels of deprivation with some of the most acute health care challenges in the UK.

    To meet these challenges, the programme will help you to be flexible and proactive and develop a sound evidence-based knowledge, enabling you to question or challenge with confidence and courage.

    Who is this course for?

    Successful completion of the PGDip Health Visiting, and School Nursing routes will enable you to gain second registration on the Specialist Community Public Health Nurse part of the NMC register (professional award).

    Successful completion of the PGDip Community Nursing in Health and Social Care, Community Children’s Nursing, District Nursing or General Practice Nursing  will enable you to record a community nursing specialist practice qualification in your chosen pathway with the NMC.

    Community Nursing in Health and Social Care, Community Children’s Nursing, District Nursing or General Practice Nursing students will also have the option to complete the Independent and Supplementary Prescribing (V300) module as part of their programme if they are supported to do so by their employing organisation.

    Students who successfully complete this module will be eligible to register an Independent and Supplementary Non-medical Prescriber qualification with the NMC, and as such be able to prescribe from the British National Formulary within your identified scope of practice.

    The Queen’s Institute of Community Nursing (Qicn) Endorsement (SPQ Pathways)

    Additionally, City St George’s, University of London has successfully achieved endorsement for our Specialist Community Nursing pathways from The Queen’s Institute of Community Nursing (Qicn).

    This additional independent national accreditation requires you to successfully complete the Independent and Supplementary Prescribing module as an essential element of your chosen pathway and will demonstrate for you how the course maps onto and reflects an Advanced Level of Practice.

    If you are eligible for this additional national accreditation, you will receive a nationally recognised digital accreditation and certificate issued by the Qicn.

    Community Children’s Nursing Pathway modules

    Those taking this pathway must undertake the five core modules and two or three elective modules (total of 120 credits). Your sponsoring employer may specify that APM060 ‘Independent and Supplementary Non-medical Prescribing (V300)’ must be undertaken.

    • Introduction to Research (15 Credits)

      This module will provide you with an introduction to different research methods relevant to public health, health, and social care. Throughout the module, you will be encouraged to think how different research methods can apply to your own areas of specialist practice through discussion and practical exercises.

    • Public Health, Health and Social Care Policy (15 Credits)

      The public health, health, and social care ‘policies’ of national government, devolved administrations, states, local boroughs, authorities, and councils can significantly impact upon the health and wellbeing of communities and the health and social care practitioners working with them. This module involves a critical examination of the contemporary health, social care and public health policy agenda and its implications for the role and practice of specialist community public health and specialist community nurses working in the primary and community care setting.

    • Leadership, Management and Innovation in Public Health and Social Care (15 Credits)

      This module aims to further develop the leadership and management competencies of qualified health and social care professionals. Throughout this module you will critically analyse theories underlying effective and efficient leadership, management and innovation development and implementation. You will have the opportunity to apply module content to plan your own practice innovation development relevant to your specialist area of practice.

    • Professional Practice for Community Nursing Specialist Practice Qualifications (SPQ) (15 Credits)

      This module will help you to develop the skills and knowledge for contemporary practice in your chosen professional field. The module is only available to students enrolled on the MSc/PGDip Public Health and Specialist Community Nursing (SCPHN/SPQ) (Community Children’s Nursing, District Nursing, General Practice Nursing, Community Nursing in Health and Social Care (Adult Social Care Nursing) and Community Nursing in Health and Social Care (Community Palliative and End of Life Care Nursing) Programme.

    • Clinical Assessment in Primary and Community Nursing Care (15 Credits)

      The module will support you to effectively assess children, young people, and adults with undiagnosed presentations, distinguish normal from abnormal findings and formulate differential diagnoses in order to manage, treat and/or refer patients.

    • Safeguarding the Health and Wellbeing of Children, Young People and Families (15 Credits)

      This module will help you develop the skills and knowledge for contemporary practice in safeguarding the health and wellbeing of children, young people, and families. You will be enabled to work competently, maintaining safe practice in situations of complexity and additional need; identifying and managing risk in the community setting.

    • Independent and Supplementary Non-medical Prescribing (V300) (30 Credits)

      This module has been designed to enable appropriately qualified, experienced healthcare practitioners registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) or Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) (chiropodists/podiatrists, physiotherapists, paramedics, and therapeutic radiographers), with prescribing rights, to enhance their scope of practice by facilitating their development into competent/proficient prescribers. A pre-requisite of undertaking this module is that you can evidence advanced clinical assessment skills, preferably gained by successfully completing an approved course of study.

    • Child and Adolescent Mental Health (15 Credits)

      This module will enhance your understanding and clinical skills in relation to child and adolescent mental health. It is taught by academic staff and clinicians with a strong evidence base and clinical focus. Teaching and learning activities are designed to help you apply theory and skills to your work with children, young people and families.

    • Psychology for Health and Social Care (15 Credits)

      The module is divided into three sections: Section 1 introduces psychological theories and evidence relevant to health and social care. Section 2 looks at the psychological impact of illness and psychological intervention. Section 3 uses case studies, such as childbirth and cardiovascular disease, to explore how psychological theory and intervention can be used in practice.

    Community Nursing in Health and Social Care Pathway modules

      This module aims to provide you with an introduction to the care and management of persons with long term conditions, with a focus on primary and community care settings.

    • Palliative Approaches to Symptom Assessment and Management in Advanced Illness (15 Credits)

      This module is designed for healthcare professionals who want to develop specialist knowledge and skills in providing assessment and management of symptoms caused by malignant and non-malignant conditions encountered in the palliative care of adults. The module focuses on the key concepts relevant to the assessment, management, and treatment of symptoms in advanced illness, and will enable you to review the aetiology, mechanism, assessment and treatment of common and difficult symptoms using a palliative care approach. The module is designed to enable you to develop your skills in assessing, diagnosing, planning, implementing and evaluating evidence based interventions and new therapies relevant to your own area of practice.

    • Leading Care in dementia and frailty (15 Credits)

      This module has been designed for practitioners of any healthcare discipline whose work involves caring for older people, people living with dementia and people living with frailty. The module will equip you with the knowledge and skills to manage the complexity of caring for people whose needs often span organisational boundaries and a continuum of care from diagnosis to end of life. The module will focus on ensuring people are at the centre of their care and decision making, along with their families and carers as appropriate.

    • Asthma and COPD (15 Credits)

      The public health, health, and social care ‘policies’ of national government, devolved administrations, states, local boroughs, authorities, and councils can significantly impact upon the health and wellbeing of communities and the health and social care practitioners working with them. This module involves a critical examination of the contemporary health, social care and public health policy agenda and its implications for the role and practice of specialist community public health and specialist community nurses working in the primary and community care setting.

    • Independent and Supplementary Non-medical Prescribing (V300) (30 Credits)

      This module has been designed to enable appropriately qualified, experienced healthcare practitioners registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) or Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) (chiropodists/podiatrists, physiotherapists, paramedics, and therapeutic radiographers), with prescribing rights, to enhance their scope of practice by facilitating their development into competent/proficient prescribers.     • Palliative Approaches to Symptom Assessment and Management in Advanced Illness (15 Credits)

      This module is designed for healthcare professionals who want to develop specialist knowledge and skills in providing assessment and management of symptoms caused by malignant and non-malignant conditions encountered in the palliative care of adults. The module focuses on the key concepts relevant to the assessment, management, and treatment of symptoms in advanced illness, and will enable you to review the aetiology, mechanism, assessment and treatment of common and difficult symptoms using a palliative care approach. The module is designed to enable you to develop your skills in assessing, diagnosing, planning, implementing and evaluating evidence based interventions and new therapies relevant to your own area of practice.

    • Leading Care in dementia and frailty (15 Credits)

      This module has been designed for practitioners of any healthcare discipline whose work involves caring for older people, people living with dementia and people living with frailty. The module will equip you with the knowledge and skills to manage the complexity of caring for people whose needs often span organisational boundaries and a continuum of care from diagnosis to end of life. The module will focus on ensuring people are at the centre of their care and decision making, along with their families and carers as appropriate.

You will develop your skills in patient consultation, history-taking, and physical assessment of patients who present with undifferentiated and undiagnosed minor injuries and illness. You will learn how to distinguish between normal and abnormal findings.     Dissertation

    The dissertation is a core module for the MSc Public Health and Specialist Community Nursing programme only (all pathways).

    • Dissertation (60 credits)

      Students who have successfully completed the Postgraduate Diploma award (120 taught credits) and hold current registration with the NMC as a Health Visitor or School Nurse or hold the recorded qualification of Community Children’s Nurse, Community Nursing in Health and Social Care, District Nurse, or General Practice Nurse will be eligible to return to complete the full MSc programme (180 credits) by completing the additional core 60 credit Dissertation Module (APM002). The Dissertation Module must be completed within five years of registration onto the Post Graduate programme.
      The dissertation provides you with the opportunity to undertake a piece of original, independent research focussed on the topics that are of particular interest to you, and you wish to explore in greater depth.

    • MSc Public Health and Specialist Community Nursing

    Teaching and assessment

    During the programme both practice and theory will develop your learning. You will spend time in the practice setting working alongside a practice assessor and practice supervisor, where you will have protected learning time, alongside this you will be required to attend City St George’s, University of London, undertaking the theory-based modules on the programme.

    During the programme you will be encouraged to analyse and apply theory in practice, and practice into theory in order to learn about the policy and practice of public health and specialist community nursing.

    You will be given the opportunity to learn how to lead the interdisciplinary and interagency team in the delivery of evidenced based care, manage complex issues systematically and creatively, and demonstrate originality in problem solving.

    This programme uses a blended learning approach. This approach combines the use of online educational materials, platforms and synchronous online sessions and in person-based teaching and learning methods.

    The learning and teaching strategies will include formal lectures, seminars; student-led seminars; group projects; simulated practice; negotiated learning, online synchronous and asynchronous learning, self-directed and practice-based activities.

    You will be required to attend/complete a programme of blended learning that will incorporate on campus, online synchronous and/or asynchronous education whilst also jointly learning in a specialist clinical practice placement.

    In agreement with your employing organisation and Programme Director, hybrid learning will also be available for students who are not able to attend the campus on a regular basis due to extenuating circumstances for example geographical location and/or caring commitments.

    You will have to achieve the necessary attendance and credits for each stage of the programme to ensure that you meet the requirements to gain the professional and academic awards.

    Practice will be undertaken with your sponsoring Health and/or Social Care provider. Students who are self-employed and/or self-funding will be supported by the University to identify a suitable Practice Placement Provider.

    Practice days

    Some of your learning opportunities will be in practice. In order to meet the standards of proficiency for Specialist Community Public Health Nurses (NMC 2022) – for Health Visiting and School Nursing and the standards of proficiency for Community Nursing Specialist Practice Qualifications (NMC 2022) – for Community Children’s Nursing, Community Nursing in Health and Social Care, District Nursing or General Practice Nursing.

    Your Practice Learning Provider will allocate you a specialist SCPHN or SPQ Practice Assessor and Practice Supervisor who will support your practice-based learning and assessment aligned with the NMC Standards for Student Supervision and Assessment (NMC 2023).

    A Link Lecturer and Academic Assessor (based at City St George’s, University of London) will also support you in practice. Practice days are timetabled throughout the programme.

    To pass the Postgraduate Diploma programme you must pass both the theory and practice components.

    You must have acquired 120 credits as specified in the relevant pathway and have successfully completed the minimum NMC requirement of no less than 45 programmed weeks of theory incorporating a minimum number of 675 hours (90 X 7.5 working days) of specialist SCPHN or SPQ practice prior to completion of the programme.

    Successful completion of the School Nursing and Health Visiting routes on this programme will enable you to gain second registration on the Specialist Community Public Health Nurses part of the NMC register (professional award) plus an academic award at Postgraduate Diploma level. You will also be able to practise as a Health Visitor or School Nurse.

    Successful completion of the Community Children’s Nursing, Community Nursing in Health and Social Care, District Nursing or General Practice Nursing route will enable you to record a community nursing specialist practice qualification with the NMC.

    The programme has been approved by the NMC. It is aligned to the NMC Standards of Proficiency for Specialist Community Public Health Nurses (NMC 2022, School Nursing and Health Visiting pathways) and Community Nursing Specialist Practice Qualification (NMC 2022, Community Children’s Nursing, Community Nursing in Health and Social Care, District Nursing or General Practice Nursing.
